NEW ULM 5, COLD SPRING 3

ALEXANDRIA — New Ulm defeated Cold Spring 5-3 to win the Bernie Classic Junior Legion baseball tournament on Saturday.

Owen Caslteman earned the win for New Ulm, striking out six and allowing three runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings. At the plate, Paxton Johnson had two hits and two RBIs, while Trevan Thordson, Castleman and Ryler Collen each had two hits.

New Ulm hosts Hopkins on Tuesday.

SLEEPY EYE 17, USC 7 (6 INNINGS)

WELLS — Sleepy Eye Junior Legion defeated United South Central 17-7 in six innings in the Southwest-East Sub-Sub-State Tournament on Sunday.

With the win, Sleepy Eye claims the top spot in the Southwest Sub-State Tournament that begins Sunday, July 19 in Ruthton.

Karter Haala earned the win for Sleepy Eye, striking out three and allowing one unearned run on no hits in four innings of work. At the plate, Derek Wales was 3 for 5 with an RBI, while Merrick Mathiowetz was 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs. Haala had two hits, and Landry Folkens had a hit and three RBIs.

MONTICELLO 6, NEW ULM 2

NEW ULM 14, EDINA 3 (5 INNINGS)

EDINA — New Ulm fell 6-2 to Monticello but defeated Edina 14-3 in five innings during the Gopher Classic Legion Baseball Tournament on Saturday.

Tanner Backer took the loss against Monticello, striking out six and allowing six runs, three earned, on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. At the plate, Hunter Larson had a hit and two RBIs, while Zach Hubbard had a hit and two runs scored.

Josh Forstner earned the win against Edina, striking out four and allowing three runs on five hits in four innings. At the plate, Levi Hopp was 2 for 2 with three RBIs, while Evan Bleckestad was 2 for 2 with two RBIs. Hubbard added two hits and an RBI.

New Ulm did not qualify to advance in the tournament, finishing the Gopher Classic with a 3-1 record. It will face Waseca at home on Tuesday.
