Brewers score 17 in sixth, rout Tigers
NEW ULM — Going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the New Ulm Brewers held a slim 5-4 lead over the Springfield Tigers.
But the Brewers used 11 walks and six hits to score 17 runs in the sixth and went on to down the Tigers 22-4 Sunday in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game at Johnson Park.
The game was stopped in the seventh inning because of the 10-run rule.
Mitch Bockenstedt got the win in relief for the Brewers, now 11-1 in the TEL. He didn’t allow any hits, walks or runs and struck out one.
Noah Neperman took the loss for the Tigers, now 8-5 in league play. Russell Beers was 2 for 4 with an RBI to lead Springfield at the plate.
Ayden Jensen hit a three-run homer, with Tanner Backer adding a double, triple and five RBIs. Noel Davilla drove in three runs with a triple also for New Ulm, while JT Hoffmann had a double and three RBIs.
New Ulm batters had 17 walks in the game.
The win by the Brewers was manager Al Flor’s 400th career win as Brewers manager.
The Tigers took a 4-0 lead off of starting pitcher Tate Becker in the third before New Ulm scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth on a Jensen three-run home run to left.
The Brewers added two more runs in the fifth on a Hoffmann sacrifice fly and a wild pitch.
New Ulm then used a parade of walks, doubles from Hoffmann and Backer, and four wild pitches to end the game in the 17-run sixth inning.
Springfield is at Leavenworh on Tuesday, while the Brewers are at Essig Wednesday for 7:30 games.
