NEW ULM — Anytime a basketball team allows its opponent to go on a 29-2 run, things don’t usually turn out well for said team in the end.

The Martin Luther College men watched Crown College go on a 29-2 run midway through the first half, and it ended up being a difference-maker in the end as the Knights fell 88-60 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference basketball action at MLC on Wednesday.

After the Knights (4-16, 1-11) took a 20-13 lead with 11:49 left in the opening half after a 3 by Austin DeNoyer, a free throw by Ethan Eisenmann and a layup by Jared Witkowiak, Crown (11-10, 5-6) got hot and went on its big 29-2 run to lead 42-22 with 3:56 left in the half. The run featured six 3-pointers by the Storm, with Sawyer Lawhon and Timothy Wendel hitting two 3s apiece.

MLC trailed 49-30 at the half.

While MLC started the second half with a strong full-court defense and trimmed its deficit to 51-40 after a layup by Eisenmann, Crown went on an 18-0 run to lead 69-40 with 11:26 left to play. The Knights cut the deficit down to 20 after that, but the Storm rumbled back and pushed their lead to 84-54 after back-to-back 3s by Seth Royston.

Crown was led by Wendel’s 26 points, 12 rebounds and six assists, while Royston had 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Knights were led by Josh Tomlin’s 13 points, while DeNoyer added 8 points and five assists. Eisenmann added 6 points and nine rebounds, while Ian Paulsen and Luke Schlomer each chipped in 6 points.

Crown shot 50% from the floor, while MLC shot 38.7%. Crown also had the advantage at the 3-point line by draining 14 of 35 3-pointers for 40%, while MLC hit 7 of 25 3s for 28%.

MLC is at Northwestern next for a 3 p.m. UMAC game Saturday.
