BECKER – While the Springfield girls finished seventh out of eighth teams in the Class A State Girls Golf Tournament on Wednesday, head coach Jennifer Schultz said that the team – composed entirely of underclassmen – had a strong outing in many of their first state tournament appearances.
“I thought they did really well,” Schultz said. “It was a little different for the individuals that had been there before, going with the team. So that was exciting. For the other three that hadn’t been to state before, it was a brand-new experience. So it was fun to see everyone’s excitement. I thought they handled things really well. We had a lot of fun Monday in the practice round. All the girls’ dads came up to be their caddies, so we had fun on the course before it all started.
“And I thought there was some great leadership with Mavri and Ava kind of letting them know that the course isn’t as hard as you think it’s going to be, so that put their teammates at ease too. The eighth-graders handled themselves really well for being there for the first time.”
Springfield shot a 779 as a team. Winkemann, a sophomore led the Tigers with a 178 overall, finishing 28th, and fellow sophomore Lipetzky shot a 197 to place 50th, both an improvement over their finishes last year (30th and 66th, respectively). Sophomore Kynslee Kastner finished 54th with a 199 in her first state tournament appearance, while eighth-grader Annie Kuehn shot a 205 to place 61st and eighth-grader Willow Krueger shot a 214 to place 73rd.
Schultz said the team was already eager to find ways to improve for next year.

“It will just excel them to practice more,” she said. “They’re already talking about, ‘We’re going to play this next tournament here or there next summer to get some competition.’ They’re already making goals and plans for putting in time on the course for next season and getting ready for the next season.”
Dawson-Boyd won the team tournament with a 678.
Also in the girls tournament, Sleepy Eye United’s Sam Price had her career-best finish in her fifth and final state tournament appearance, shooting a 164 to tie for 11th.
“I think I had a lot of confidence today, which definitely helped,” Price said. “Knowing that it was going to be my last round, I definitely wanted to finish strong. Having that confidence definitely helped me play well today.”
Price had a strong second round on Wednesday, having the third-lowest score of any golfer on Day 2 with a 77.

“It means everything,” Price said. “It shows how hard I’ve worked over the years. To start off the season it wasn’t so great, so to finish off so strong shows what kind of golfer I am.”
Price said her wedges helped her the most during this year’s tournament.
“My wedges from 100 yards out, today especially, I hit many greens from that yardage, so I didn’t have to chip much at all from right around the green. That definitely helped a lot too.”
SEU head coach Bryant Mages said he was happy to see Sam close her time with SEU on a high note.
“Super happy that Sam was able to finish off her career with a really good round,” Mages said. “Round 1 wasn’t really her best, but she came out [Wednesday] in a really great mood and golfed like she had nothing to lose. It was really good to see all of her hard work pay off and have a good round today.”
Also from SEU, Kiara Murphy shot a 193 overall to place 44th, an improvement over her 54th-place finish last year. Heritage Christian Academy’s Aly Bormes won the individual tournament with a 152.
