Shooting woes doom Knights

NEW ULM — St. Scholastica downed Martin Luther College 70-45 on Wednesday in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball game.
The Saints took advantage of Knight turnovers, played well defensively and rebounded well to earn the victory.
CSS jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. Erika Gosch’s 3-pointer brought MLC within 4 points at 7-3. That was as close as the Knights could get for the duration of the contest.
Jayden Koehler’s 3-pointer helped to reduce the Knights’ deficit, making it 12-6. Christina Furey answered with a basket, Ramsey Moe canned a 3-pointer and Eve Turner hit two free throws to end the quarter with a 7-0 run and a 19-6 lead for CSS.
The Saints got the rebound on an MLC missed shot. Lizzie Altendorf then passed to Emma Schmidt, who scored on a fast-break layup midway through the second quarter. Halley Engelbrecht then hit a 3-pointer and Emily Witkowski scored for MLC. Amelia Zmuda canned a 3-pointer for the Saints and Furey hit two free throws for a 39-20 halftime lead.
MLC scored 17 points in the third quarter, while the Saints earned 21 points. Any time the Knights seemed to gain momentum, CSS answered. Late in the quarter, Karli Skog and Schmidt nailed 3-pointers for CSS. The Saints’ biggest lead was by 28 points.
The Saints outscored MLC 10-6 in a low-scoring final quarter. They scored a total of 17 points off of MLC turnovers and 15 points were second-chance baskets. CSS was 25 of 61 for 41% on field goals, 6 of 20 for 40% in 3-pointers and 12 of 18 for 67% from the free-throw line.
MLC shot 26.2% from the field, 24% from beyond the arc and 70% from the free-throw line.
Gosch led MLC with 12 points, while Witkowski and Koehler each scored 7 points. Emily Rothfuss had nine rebounds also for the Knights, while Kortney Behnke had five assists.
Kaylee Kennedy led CSS with 16 points, Schmidt added 14 points and six rebounds and Skog scored 11 points and had three steals. Lizzie Altendorf had seven rebounds and Furey added six rebounds.
MLC (0-12, 0-4) will host the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday. The game was originally scheduled to be at UW-Superior but was moved to MLC following maintenance issues with the Yellowjackets’ gymnasium. It has a scheduled tip-off time of 4:45 p.m. after the MLC men’s 3 p.m. game.
