TEL roundup: Cubs come back, top Tigers

COURTLAND 8, SPRINGFIELD 5

SPRINGFIELD — The Courtland Cubs scored four runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Springfield Tigers 8-5 in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game on Wednesday.

Josh Giefer was the winning pitcher for the Cubs, striking out two and allowing one earned run on three hits in 4 1/3 innings. Chase Meyer pitched 4 2/3 innings, striking out three and allowing four unearned runs on two hits. At the plate for Courtland, Jackson Bode was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Maddox Mortenson was 2 for 4 with and RBI and two runs scored. Carter Lang added a hit and two RBIs.

Brandon Wilhelmi took the loss for Springfield, striking out one and allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits in 1 2/3 innings. Jordan Milbrath made the start, striking out three and allowing two runs on four hits in five innings. At the plate, Tyler Hach was 2 for 5 with three RBIs, while Milbrath and Ryan Sturm each had a hit and an RBI.

Courtland scored the first run of the game in the second inning, with Mortenson singling to bring home Nolan Drill. Neither team scored again until the fifth inning, where a groundout put into play by Drill brought home Bode for a 2-0 Courtland lead, but Springfield responded with a four-run bottom of the inning. Milbrath drew a walk with bases loaded to score on run, then double by Hach brought home three more for a 4-2 lead. Springfield made it 5-2 as a sacrifice bunt by Sturm plated Scheffler in the seventh, but Courtland scored five in the eighth, with Bode’s single with bases loaded scoring two runs, then Lang’s double scored two more for a 7-5 lead. An error allowed Mortenson to score in the ninth for one more insurance run in the 8-5 win.

Courtland (10-2) hosts Leavenworth on Friday, while Springfield (8-4) plays a non-league game against the Milroy Yankees on Friday.

SEARLES 10, ST. JAMES 3

SEARLES — The Searles Grizzlies topped the St. James Athletics 10-3 in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game on Wednesday.

Nick Dewanz was the winning pitcher for Searles, striking out five and allowing two runs on six hits in six innings. Mark Schommer pitched three innings, striking out five and allowing one unearned run on two hits. At the plate, Kasey Kuck was 3 for 5 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored, while Isaiah Rieser was 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Graham Glaser had two hits, an RBI and a run scored, while Schommer added a solo home run.

David Bradley took the loss for the A’s, striking out one and allowing six runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings. At the plate, Bradley was 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Jacob Brey had two hits and Sawyer Carr had a hit and an RBI.

Searles (5-6) hosts Lamberton on Sunday, while St. James (3-8) plays at Sleepy Eye on Sunday.

SLEEPY EYE 14, GIBBON 11

SLEEPY EYE — The Sleepy Eye Indians downed the Gibbon Reds 14-11 in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game on Wednesday.

Jake Mielke earned the win for Sleepy Eye, striking out two and allowing no runs on one hit in two innings. Marcus Martinez made the start, striking out one and allowing eight runs, six earned, on seven hits in three innings. At the plate, Luke Mielke was 3 for 5 with five RBIs, while Jon Petermann was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Matt Mielke added two hits, an RBI and two runs scored.

Alex Perkner took the loss for Gibbon, striking out one and allowing three runs, none earned, on three hits in two innings. Layton Hamre made the start, striking out four and allowing nine runs on nine hits in five innings. At the plate, Ethan Schwarzrock was 3 for 4 with four RBis and three runs scored, while Josh Wasmund was 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs. Kyle Mauer was 2 for 4 with three RBIs.

Sleepy Eye (4-7) hosts St. James on Sunday, while Gibbon (5-6) hosts Essig on Sunday.
