NEW ULM — It took a while longer, but Sean Howk eventually got to where he wanted to be.

Howk qualified for his fifth state wrestling tournament Saturday afternoon, but he had to wrestle a true-second match to get there. Howk and Colby Wenninger (285) are New Ulm’s only state tournament qualifiers in a day where as many as five Eagles battled in a true-second match.

Carter Brandes (113), Jackson Bode (126) and Cole Ranweiler were denied state tournament appearances after falling in their true-second matches. The Class AA state individual wrestling tournament begins on Friday at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

“It’s one of those cases where those are the most intense matches of the whole tournament,” New Ulm coach John Rieser said. “It’s exciting and it’s also very nerve wracking. There’s a state tournament appearance on the line and it’s intense.”

Howk lost to Payton Anderson of Fairmont/Martin County West in the championship match and he had to wrestle Dalton Rose of Morris. Howk picked up the win there and will compete on Friday in his fifth state appearance.

Wenninger, meanwhile came back and defeated Kyle Mullaney of Worthington to earn his first trip to state.

“They’re excited, this is what we work for,” Rieser said of Wenninger and Howk. “Wrestling is a team sport, but you get a chance to go as an individual, too. But this is part of the reason why we work so hard.”

Redwood/River Valley had five qualify for the state meet: Omar Arredondo (second, 138), Tayte Harrazin (first, 152), James Ploeger (second, 182), Kaleb Haase (second, 220) and Chad Maddock (first, 285) will all compete in St. Paul on Friday.
