Immunization for diphtheria was the principal recommendation made in both of the Infants’ and Children’s clinics held at Hanska and Springfield, May 12 and 13, respectively, a report from the Minnesota Public Health association states. While there was no large percentage of defects found, yet the figures are, nevertheless, thought provoking.
Children Underweight.
Of the total of 60 children examined in the two communities, 8 girls and 2 boys were found to be 10 per cent underweight; 11 girls and 2 boys had decayed teeth. One thyroid case was found, and 6 children had nose and throat defects. Parents of children in need of medical attention were advised to consult their family physician.
That 10 out of 60 children should be discovered to be underweight is in itself a matter of importance. “The value of a physical examination cannot be overestimated,” declared the State association. “When children are found to be underweight, one immediately looks for the cause. It often leads to the correcting of defects to a change in diet, to more rest and sleep. In these ways the child’s resistance is often greatly built up. It is in the finding of these conditions that such clinics are of value.”
Value of Examinations.
The clinics are but one of the means the State association is using in stressing the value of yearly physical examinations for the children and adults. This movement, on which nationwide emphasis is being placed, will do much to prevent chronic diseases for one obtaining a foothold.
Mrs. Ora Trautman acted as county clinic chairman. At Hanska Mrs. A.E. Norman was clinic chairman. She was ably assisted by Mrs. M. G. Ouren, Mrs. Henry Anderson and Mrs. A. M. Paulson.
In Springfield, Mrs. G. P. Forster was clinic chairman and was assisted by Mrs. A. E. Norman, Mrs. George Bockman, Mrs. Otto Lehrer, Mrs. F. Schmidt and Mrs. E. L. Nippolt. Mrs. M. G. Ouren also gave her services to Springfield.
The Infants’ and Children’s clinic is only one of the activities supported by the Christmas Seal sale.
