NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral remained perfect as the Greyhounds swept Sleepy Eye on Monday 11-1 and 6-0 in a softball doubleheader.

Cathedral started out strong and never looked back to win Game 1 in five innings. It scored three runs in the first inning, three runs in the second inning and four runs in the fifth inning.

“That three-run home run (by Franta) early really helped us, and we hit the ball well,” Cathedral head coach Bob Mertz said.

The Greyhounds’ Jenna Helget was hit by pitch, moved the second on a Rose Hazuka walk and scored. Lauryn Franta crushed a pitch to left field for a home run that scored Helget, Hazuka and Franta for a 3-0 Cathedral lead.

In the second inning, Cathedral’s Heidi Hoffman singled, went to second on a Sleepy Eye catcher miscue and scored on an error.

Later, Sarah Mohr drew a walk, Helget reached on an error and both scored when Josie Pautzke slapped a single for two more runs that increased Cathedral’s advantage to 6-0 after two innings.

Sleepy Eye answered with a run of its own in the third inning when McKenna Strong singled. She scored on a Lauren Klein single for the Indians.

Mohr walked, advanced on an out and scored on a center field single by Hazuka for a 7-1 Greyhound lead after four innings.

Cathedral pushed across four runs in its turn in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Greyhounds pounded out five singles, had two stolen bases and an Indian error making it 11-1 for Cathedral.

“Our pitcher fell behind in the count, we made some defensive and mental errors, which hurt us,” Sleepy Eye head coach Tim Hoffmann said. He credited the Cathedral defense for making some very good plays despite the Indians hitting the ball well.

Josie Pautzke earned the win in Game 1. She went five innings, gave up one run on three hits and she struck out six batters.

Kathryn Schroepfer took the loss pitching all five innings.

Klein had two hits and an RBI for Sleepy Eye while Strong had one run scored.

The Greyhounds prevailed in Game 2 winning 6-0 in five innings. Rose Hazuka did well at the plate going five for six over both contests.

“She had a great day,” Cathedral head coach Bob Mertz said.

Hoffman earned the victory in the second game. She pitched three innings, gave up no runs, two hits and she struck out three batters.

Helget, of Cathedral, went 3 for 3 with two RBIs, Pautzke went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and Hazuka was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Cathedral (11-0) will play at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Thursday in a doubleheader. Sleepy Eye (4-4) will host Redwood Valley on Tuesday.
