Good old days have to end

To the editor: In response: Ready for change? (Feb. 6) Thank you for, again, another passionate opinion. I find it interesting that you expect all cultures to conform to "naturally assimilate into the culture of that area" because "'we are' ready for that kind of change." The only change you are prepared for is for things to stay the same. I assure you that your culture and your fragility are protected, and it won't be threatened by another race moving into the area. I also find it interesting that you chose to blame disparities solely on their choices determining "where on the ...

Ready for change?

To the editor: In a recent article entitled “Equity: Are We Ready for Change?” the Journal reported on an equity “training” sponsored by the New Ulm Human Rights Commission (HRC). According to the article, the event highlighted two facts: 1) in coming years, the percentage of non-whites in our area is likely to increase, and 2) black Americans, taken as a group, have lower annual incomes than whites, as a group. As far as the coming change in the racial and ethnic makeup of our city is concerned, there is nothing in that change that requires special preparation on our ...

Political responsibility

To the editor: The price of greatness is responsibility, according to Winston Churchill. Career politicians on every level of government need to take a long hike into retirement for “new, ethical, responsible blood” to hold office, doing their jobs to serve the citizens, not hold office to “line their pockets to become millionaires.” They all come into office with average peon incomes; but in no time, are super wealthy on the government’s dime! Biden’s bad deal

President Biden offered a deal on the border to congressional Republicans that they could refuse. To their credit, they did. The president, speaking from South Carolina, said he would shut down the border “right now,” if Congress passed the proposed bipartisan deal now in front of them. The proposed deal, Biden said, would “give me as president, the emergency authority to shut down the border until it could get back under control.” This deal offer is ridiculous on its face. The administration has refused to enforce immigration laws that have been in place for years, but now ...

Doesn’t anyone learn from or know history anymore?

To the editor: Dec. 2, 1954 The US Senate passed, 67-22, a resolution condemning Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy of Wisconsin, stating he had “Acted contrary to Senatorial ethics and tended to bring the Senate into dishonor and disrepute.” If Senator McCarthy did not like someone he would call them a communist, instead of a RINO or a pedophile as Mr. Trump does. Back when America was Great, Mr. McCarthy’s fellow senators held higher standards and new this was wrong. They did something about it. July 24,1974 The US Supreme Court unanimously ruled that President Nixon’s claims of ...
