Street Department quickly cleans up storm debris

Thursday afternoon’s storm hit hard and fast, leaving debris scattered throughout New Ulm. There were few sections of the city without a down tree or branch laying in the road. Fortunately, the streets were not blocked for long. Much of the big debris was removed quickly. New Ulm Street Department started clearing fallen tree limbs from the street before the storm was fully over. It was an impressive and efficient operation by city work crews. They deserve a thumb up for the quick response.

NU Brewers,

Courtland Cubs reach tournaments

Last weekend, the New Ulm Brewers and Courtland Cubs of Region 2C both won their way to the final weekend of the Class C Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament, which begins this Saturday. The tall task of winning three games this weekend stands in front of both teams if they want to make it to the state title game on Monday. However, having two teams from the area making it this far is no easy feat and worth talking about. If the teams win their way through the weekend, their spots on the state bracket mean they would meet in the Class C title game Monday.

Remembering the Labor movement

on Labor Day

Monday is Labor Day. For some this means a day off to end summer break, but its more than that. The federal holiday is a celebration and recognition of the labor movement in this country. In the late 1800s, labor organizations fought hard to ensure many staples sometimes taken for granted, including the standard eight hour work day. Labor Day became an official federal holiday in 1894. Hundreds of other countries celebrate some version of the holiday; though many celebrate on International Worker’s Day on May 1. The United States celebrates Labor Day in September, instead of May 1 to avoid connecting the holiday to the Chicago Haymarket riot of 1886. However the country chooses to celebrate it is important to remember those who fought and died to ensure fair working conditions.
