NU plays in 3rd consecutive Jr. Legion State Baseball tournament

The New Ulm Junior Legion Gold defeated Marshall Thursday to win the Division 1 Junior Legion Sub-State G Baseball Tournament. The win moves Junior Gold to next week’s state tournament, in Alexandria. The win over Marshall was impressive in itself, but it also meant that New Ulm will be playing in its third consecutive Junior Legion State Baseball Tournament. Also for New Ulm, the New Ulm Legion Gold baseball team already has a state berth in the D1 Senior Legion State Baseball Tournament since New Ulm hosts the tourney next week. However, the Gold will have a chance to enter the state tournament as sub-state champions, as they play in the Division 1 Senior Legion Sub-State 2 Baseball Tournament finals on today in Mankato.

New Ulm awarded for hosting CGMC conference

The Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities held its summer conference in New Ulm this week. The conference began Wednesday and wrapped up Friday morning. The conference brought representatives of small cities from all across the state to New Ulm. The purpose of the conference is to allow city officials to connect and learn about important issues impacting Greater Minnesota. However, by bringing the conference to New Ulm, it is a great chance to spotlight the community. Many of the conference attendees took part in tours of New Ulm the last few days. Thursday evening during the conference’s award recognition ceremony, New Ulm was given an award for Excellence in Service, not only for hosting the conference but for the work of its elected officials and staff at the State Capitol on lead line replacement, water infrastructure and housing.

Crazy Days is back-to-back

New Ulm’s Crazy Days are back this weekend. The fun began Friday night with many of the downtown stores offering sales discounts. Later in the evening artificial turf was rolled out of the downtown Polka Palooza. The Misfits were the first to perform during the street dance followed by the Tanner Stark Band. In between performances, New Ulm hosted the U.S. Steinholding Association Qualifying Event. The winner advances to the Minnesota State Championship held during New Ulm’s Oktoberfest celebrations. Saturday, the fun continues with the annual ping pong ball drop. This time the ping pong balls will be dropped off the Gallery 512 roof. Each of the balls has a coupon for a discount at area stores. Downtown will also see multiple craft and vendor shows, one inside the NU Franklin building and the other in the New Ulm City Hall Parking lot.
