Drum the bucket

NEW ULM — Jefferson Elementary’s fourth grade will give special bucket drumming performances through Wednesday.

The students began practicing bucket drumming in March with Jefferson music teacher Madeline Cacciatore. This week the students are able to show off their skills for parents outside by the Jefferson ball field.

Bucket drumming is usually taught to the fifth-grade students, but with the pandemic, the school decided to give the fourth-grade class an outdoor performance. Cacciatore said last year the third-graders were unable to give a musical performance for their parents. Now that those students are fourth-graders, this drum performances make up for what they lost last year.

Cacciatore said the students are enthusiastic about bucket drumming.

“They love it, it is a good challenge for them,” she said.

There are six fourth-grade classes at Jefferson. All six will give a bucket drum performance this week, with two classes playing bucket drums each afternoon on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
