Rheumatology transitions at NUMC: Introducing Dr. Scott Glickstein

After the retirement of Dr. Schned, Dr. Scott Glickstein will begin seeing rheumatology patients at NUMC this summer.

After 32 years of providing Rheumatology services at New Ulm Medical Center, Eric Schned, MD, has retired and is handing the reins over to a trusted colleague – Scott Glickstein, MD. Dr. Glickstein will transition this summer from a full-time practice at HealthPartners Park Nicollet, where he has seen patients for 30 + years, to a part-time outreach practice four days a month in New Ulm, similar to Dr. Schned’s previous schedule.

Dr. Glickstein notes that he chose rheumatology as a specialty because he enjoys long-lasting relationships with patients and the challenge of solving clinical problems to help provide people with improved health and a better quality of life.

“Collecting information from my patients about their symptoms and their history forms the foundation for further exploration and understanding of the medical problem,” Dr. Glickstein said. This kind of information gathering takes time and careful listening, he said, and his patients have come to know him for this kind of thoughtful approach to partnering with them.

“I try to understand the problems that my patients experience and extract information that guides further evaluations and treatment recommendations,” Dr. Glickstein said.

Rheumatology encompasses many different kinds of conditions, Dr. Glickstein noted.

“Most conditions involve one of several main features – arthritis, inflammation and/or pain. My main professional interests include the inflammatory associated conditions of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriatic arthritis, gout and vasculitis,” Dr. Glickstein said. “I also have a strong interest in osteoporosis. My practice is not limited to these areas; I care for many other patients with a wide range of other, less inflammatory problems.”

Dr. Glickstein will be supported by Kitty Rader, DNP, who has specialty training in Rheumatology. Kitty will be able to do some follow-up patient visits for Dr. Glickstein as well as medication refills.

Dr. Glickstein completed his medical degree at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, an Internal Medicine internship at the Brown University Program at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, and a medical residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Rheumatology at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Internal Medicine-Rheumatology.

Away from the office, Dr. Glickstein loves to spend time with his family and friends. He enjoys bike riding, playing tennis and hiking. He also likes to cook and explore ethnic cuisines, in restaurants or at home. “Movies have always been a passion of mine,” he said. “I enjoy reading and wish I could do more.”
