NEW ULM — New Ulm Brewers right-hander Wade French pitched eight innings of five-hit ball and J.T. Hoffmann had three hits including a double, triple and home run and drove in five runs as the Brewers topped Hanska 10-1 Tuesday night in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game at Johnson Park.
French struck out five in his eight innings of work.
The only run scored by the Lakers came in the first inning on two infield hits, an error and groundout.
Adam Nilson closed out the ninth inning for the Brewers, now 14-1 in TEL play.
The win also clinched first place in the TEL for the Brewers with one league game remaining against Lamberton Thursday at 7:30 at Johnson Park.
Aaron Portner took the loss for Hanska (10-6). He went five innings and allowed seven runs on seven hits.
Ayden Jensen added two hits for the Brewers.
“This was a fun game,” French said. “I feel like, as a starting pitcher with our guys, if we can keep them one or two or three runs that we will win because we are going to score.”
French gave up the only run of the game in the first on an infield single from Kevin Larson, a French error, a passed ball and a Derek Wilfahrt groundout.
Other than that, French allowed just three more hits in his last seven innings.
“They put up that first run, but we came back and got two right away and never looked back from there.” French said.
New Ulm scored twice in the bottom of the first when Hunter Ranweiler reached on an error and Hoffmann doubled to right field.
A wild pitch and a passed ball scored two runs.
The Brewers added two more runs in the third when Colton Schaefer singled, and one out later Hoffmann drove Portner’s first pitch over the fence in right field for a 4-1 lead.
New Ulm added two more runs in the fourth when Jensen singeled and Andrew Peters reached on an infield error. French helped his own cause with a two-run double.
Cole Ranweiler’s leadoff double in the seventh, an error and a Zach Hoffmann sacrifice fly made it 7-1.
The Brewers and J.T. Hoffmann put a bow on the game in the eighth.
Jensen led off with a walk, Schaefer singled and Hunter Ranweiler walked to load the bases for J. T. Hoffmann
He drove a three-run triple to right-center for a 10-1 lead.
“He [Hoffmann] has power, he can go to the opposite field, he has speed and can lay down bunts,” French said about Hoffmann. “He can pretty much do it all. This team can score runs, Having J.T., brothers Zach and Trevor Nissen, the Ranweilers — they can all hit the ball and score runs.”
