Area roundup: Sleepy Eye takes down Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey

Sleepy Eye 9, MLA/C 4
MOUNTAIN LAKE — Sleepy Eye bounced back from a season-opening loss Thursday to New Ulm Cathedral with a 9-4 nonconference softball win over Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey on Friday.
Taylor Berkner got the complete-game win for Sleepy Eye, allowing three hits and striking out 13.
Julia Berkner was 3 for 4 with two runs scored, while Paige Haala was 3 for 5 with two runs scored. Callie Evers was 2 for 3 also for Sleepy Eye, while Nora Coulson had a double and three RBIs. Berkner and Katelyn Tauer each had two hits for Sleepy Eye, which had 15 total hits and eight players recording at least one hit.
Sleepy Eye (1-1) hosts Wabasso for a conference doubleheader on Monday.
WEM 9, Nicollet 8
NICOLLET — Waterville-Elysian-Morristown held off Nicollet 9-8 on Friday in a nonconference softball game.
Leah Bode took the complete-game loss in the circle, allowing eight hits and four walks for four runs while striking out seven.
Cason Forbrook led the Nicollet bats, going for 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs, while Zoie Rengstorf was 2 for 2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Lydia Martens was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs also for Nicollet.
Nicollet (0-1) is at Cleveland on Saturday for a split doubleheader, taking on Cleveland first at 10 a.m. and following that with a noon game against United South Central.
LCWM 4, St. James 0
LAKE CRYSTAL — Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial opened its softball season with a 4-0 nonconference shutout over St. James on Friday.
Avery Voges allowed one hit from the circle to earn the win while striking out 14.
She also had two hits to lead the Knights, while Sydney Kramer also added two hits.
LCWM travels to Martin Luther for a Valley Conference game on Tuesday.
PREP BASEBALL
Madelia 6, JWP 3
MADELIA — Madelia had enough left over from Thursday’s 36-3 rout of Alden-Conger to defeat Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 6-3 on Friday in a nonconference baseball game.
Madelia was led by Carter Florez, who was 2 for 3, while Tate Becker was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Zach Jacobs was 1 for 3 with a double and a run scored and Evan Coil was 1 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs.
Becker also got the win in three innings, allowing two hits and three walk for one earned run while striking out four. Jacobs pitched four innings in relief, allowing three hits and a walk for one unearned run while fanning seven.
Madelia (2-0) is at Mankato Loyola for a 6 p.m. Valley Conference game on Thursday.

New Ulm girls take 4th in Fairmont
FAIRMONT — The New Ulm girls track and field team took fourth at a Fairmont track and field meet on Thursday, finishing with 34 points.
Mankato East won the girls side with a 251, followed by St. Peter (128), Fairmont (126), New Ulm (34) and Maple River (15).
Mankato East won the boys side of the meet also (217), followed by Fairmont (132), Maple River (61) and New Ulm (42).
Leah Brustad took third in the girls 100 for New Ulm (13.85), while teammate Kaelyn Eikanger took fourth in the girls 400 (1:08.94). New Ulm’s Ellie Dake took fifth (29-1.75) in the girls shot put and fifth in the girls discus (76-3), while Eikanger took third in the girls high jump (4-8).
For the New Ulm boys, Easton Clark took third in the boys 400 (54.73) and first in the long jump (19-5), while Ethan Lieb took first in the high jump (5-10).
