New Ulm schools finish milestone-packed winter season

The 2023-24 high school winter season here in New Ulm may well have been the best in history with records broken and set.

Be it on the basketball court or on the ice, this was one for the books.

In boys hockey, the New Ulm Eagles’ Austin Uecker put his moniker on several school records.

He set the career mark for points with 204, goals with 91, assists with 113 and he averaged 2.37 points per game. He totaled 82 points this season, which is a record for one year, and had 39 goals. He also set the single-season record for 43 assists this year.

State-wise, Uecker was fifth in the state in points with 82 and assists with 43 and ninth in the state with goals at 39.

On the basketball court, New Ulm High School’s Colton Benson became New Ulm High School’s and the City of New Ulm’s all-time career boys leading scorer with 2,207 points.

Benson also set the school record for points in a game with 49, 118 three-pointers made and 318 treys in a career.

Also this season, his running mate James Osborne cracked the 1,000-career-point mark and joined his older brother Charlie (1,135) in the 1,000-career-point total, ending with 1,518 career points.

That means that the Eagles need to replace the bulk of their scoring for next season.

The New Ulm Eagles girls basketball team saw both senior Daviney Dreckman and junior Morgan Hulke break the 1,000-career-point total this year.

Dreckman, who saw her senior season this year cut short when she tore her ACL, ended with 1,301 career points after missing the last eight games of the season.

Hulke, a junior, goes into her senior year with 1,125 career points.

Just a note, but Hulke needs 7 points next season to pass her assistant coach at New Ulm High School, Mitch Lewis, in career points. Lewis’ career mark of 1,131 points was set at New Ulm Cathedral.

At New Ulm Cathedral, senior Jevan Wilfahrt became the Greyhounds’ all-time leading scorer with 1,783 career points, passing Jon Zinniel’s mark of 1,700.

And Jenna Hotovec scored her 1,000th career point for the Greyhounds and ends her career with 1,228 points.

Ben Pearson at Minnesota Valley Lutheran finished his career with 1,685 points, third in school history. Pearson also holds the school record for points in a game with 46.

That means that 9,722 career points in basketball graduate, along with 204 career points in hockey.
