New Ulm 7, Worthington 0

NEW ULM — New Ulm beat Worthington 7-0 in a Big South Conference softball game on Thursday.

New Ulm was led by Maddie Backer, who went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two stolen bases, while Kenzie Enter was 2 for 4. Gracie Linbo was 2 for 3 with one RBI also for New Ulm.

Ramsey Hopp got the win, pitching a complete-game shutout while allowing three hits and one walk. She struck out 14.

New Ulm (7-0, 4-0) will travel to Marshall on Monday.

Cathedral 30, GFW 4 (Game 1, 6 innings)

Cathedral 14, GFW 0 (Game 2 5 innings)

WINTHROP — New Ulm Cathedral downed Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in both games of a Tomahawk Conference softball doubleheader on Thursday, winning the first game by a score of 30-4 in six innings and the second game 14-0 in five.

Abbey Hillesheim got the win in the circle in Game 1, allowing nine hits and a walk while striking out two. She also was 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI, while Ava Schmid was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs and Alexa Hornick was 3 for 5 with a double and two RBIs.

Ellison Fitzpatrick took the loss for GFW in Game 1, allowing 18 hits and eight walks while fanning one. Taylor Schafer had a homer and two RBIs for GFW, while Halle Bleick was 2 for 3 with a double.

In Game 2, Jayde Altermatt for the win, allowing three hits while striking out eight. Kiah Helget was 2 for 3 with a homer, a double and five RBIs to lead the Greyhounds at the plate, while Madelyn Haala was 2 for 3 with a double.

Bleick took the Game 2 loss, allowing eight hits and five walks while striking out three. Ashlynn Hubred, Kailynn Hubred and Schafer each had a hit for GFW in Game 2.

LCWM 5, Madelia 0

MADELIA — Nettie Parsons’ no-hitter led Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial to a 5-0 shutout of Madelia on Thursday in a Valley Conference softball game.

Parsons threw 14 strikeouts in the win and also allowed just one player on base on a hit by pitch, hitting Lauryn Grev with a pitch.

Parsons also had two hits, including a double, while Avery Voges was 1 for 2 with two RBIs.

Corban Tatro pitched all seven innings for the Blackhawks in defeat, allowing three hits and a walk for one earned run while striking out nine.

LCWM (8-0, 4-0) is scheduled to play at Jackson County Central on Friday.

Madelia (5-4, 1-4) is scheduled to travel to Caswell Park in North Mankato Friday to begin a tournament, with its first game taking place at 7 p.m. Friday against Blooming Prairie. The tournament concludes Saturday.

Springfield 8, Sleepy Eye 3 (Game 1)

Sleepy Eye 8, Springfield 0 (Game 2)

SLEEPY EYE — Springfield beat Sleepy Eye 8-3 in game one and Sleepy Eye won 8-0 in game two in a Tomahawk Conference softball doubleheader on Thursday.

In Game 1, Springfield was led by Brooklyn Sturm, who was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, while Abby Groebner was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Jalivia Richert was 1 for 3 with a double.

Richert was the winning pitcher, going seven innings giving up three runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out eight.

Sleepy Eye was led by Katelyn Tauer, who went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs, while Callie Evers went 3 for 4 with a double.

Katelyn Tauer took the loss, allowing eight runs giving up 11 hits, five walks and striking out 11.

In Game 2, Sleepy Eye was led by Taylor Berkner, who went 4 for 4 with a double and an RBI, while Katelyn Tauer went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs and Jace Schauman went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Taylor Berkner went seven innings for the win, giving up zero runs on one hit and six walks. She had six strikeouts.

Springfield was led by Brooklyn Sturm, who went 1 for 2.

Regan Beadell got the loss for Springfield going four innings and giving up six runs on 13 hits and three walks while striking out one.

Sleepy Eye (6-4, 4-4) will play St. Mary’s on Thursday in a doubleheader, while Springfield (5-2, 4-2) will play Wabasso on Monday.

Wabasso 22, BLHS 0 (Game 1, 6 innings)

STEWART — Wabasso won two games against Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday, winning Game 1 by a score of 22-0 and Game 2 by a score of 13-0 in a Tomahawk Conference softball doubleheader.

Wabasso was led in Game 1 by Audrey Johnson, who went 4 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, while Addisyn Hillesheim went 3 for 3 with two RBI’s and Sara Carlson went 1 for 4 with a home run. Annabelle Struntz went 2 for 5 with a home run with four RBIs.

Avery Carlson got the win in Game 1, going five innings and giving up no runs on two hits and one walk. She struck out 11.

In Game 2, Wabasso was led by Lyla Kittleson, who went 2 for 2 with two home runs and four RBIs, while Avery Carlson went 2 for 3 with three runs scored and Audrey Johnson went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs.

Avery Carlson got the win, going two innings and striking out three.

Wabasso (6-2, 6-2) will travel to Springfield on Monday, while BLHS (2-5, 2-4) will travel to Lester Prarie on Friday.

PREP BASEBALL

St. Mary’s 8, MVL 0 (Game 1)

St. Mary’s 4 MVL 1 (Game 2)

SLEEPY EYE — St Mary’s wins two games against MVL in a Tomahawk Conference doubleheader on Thursday.

St. Mary’s was led by Mark Anderson who went 2 for 2, while Merrick Mathiowetz went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Talan Helget went 1 for 4 with a triple.

Mark Anderson also got the win going seven innings, allowing no runs on four hits and three walks while striking out nine.

MVL got a single each from Kaden Peterson, Connor Bode, Zachary Riederer and Bradyn Kube.

Kaden Peterson got the loss going five innings, giving up five runs on four hits and six walks while striking out five.

In Game 2, St. Mary’s was led by Tyler Mathiowetz, who went 2 for 3 while, Jonny Petermann went 1 for 3 and Kessler Severson went 1 for 2.

Brandon Schmitz got the win, going seven innings and giving up one run on six hits and striking out eight.

MVL was led by Zachary Riederer, who went 2 for 3, while Gage Stanoch went 1 for 1 with an RBI.

Joshua Vander Plas got the loss going seven innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and one walk striking out nine.

St. Mary’s (7-2, 6-2) will travel to BLHS on Monday, while MVL (5-5, 4-5) will travel to Maple River on Saturday.

Sleepy Eye 4, Springfield 1 (Game 1)

Sleepy Eye 6, Springfield 4 (Game 2)

SPRINGFIELD — Sleepy Eye earned a Tomahawk Conference doubleheader sweep over Springfield on Thursday, winning the first game 4-1 and the second game 6-4.

In Game 1, Winsten Nienhaus earned the complete-game win. He allowed five hits and two walks for one earned run while striking out four. Caden Evers led the Indians at the plate, going 1 for 2 with two RBIs.

Jakob Nachreiner took the loss in five innings, allowing four hits and three walks for two earned runs while striking out eight. Kade Nachreiner led Springfield at the plate, going 1 for 3 with a run scored.

In Game 2, Marcus Martinez got the win in 5 1/3 innings. He allowed six hits and two walks for three earned runs while striking out five. Cody Schultz was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, while Isaac Lendt was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Austin Uecker was 2 for 4. Evers tripled and had two RBIs.

Kade Nachreiner took the Game 2 loss, giving up nine hits and three walks for four earned runs while fanning six. He was also 2 for 2 with an RBI, while Jackson Ludewig was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Russell Beers was 2 for 4 with a double. Aiden Moriarty added a double and two RBIs.

Sleepy Eye is scheduled to travel to take on Red Rock Central on Friday, while Springfield hosts Wabasso at 5 p.m. Monday.

Wabasso 13, BLHS 0 (Game 1, 5 innings)

Wabasso 27, BLHS 2 (Game 2, 5 innings)

WABASSO — Wabasso ran by Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart in both games of a Tomahawk Conference doubleheader, winning the opening 13-0 in five innings and the second 27-2.

Joe Liebl earned the Game 1 win, pitching all five innings and allowing two hits and two walks while striking out 13 in the shutout. He also homered, singled and drove in three to lead the Rabbits at the plate, while Noah Anderson and Jaxson Wagner each had a double and two RBIs apiece.

Caden Hickle took the loss in Game 1 for BLHS, allowing eight hits and four walks for six earned runs in three innings. Alex Taylor and Cameron McColley each had a single in Game 1 for BLHS.

In Game 2, Ethan Jenniges got the win in three innings, allowing three hits and two walks for one earned run while fanning three. Leading the way for Wabasso at the plate was Jayden Remiger, who had a homer, a triple, two doubles and seven RBIs. Zach Skoblik doubled and drove in three runs also for Wabasso, while Preston Remiger had a triple and an RBI.

Alex Taylor took the Game 2 loss, allowing eight hits and a walk for 10 runs in 1/3 inning pitched. He also had a single and a walk to lead BLHS at the plate in Game 2, while Eli Kurtz had a single and an RBI.

Wabasso is at Springfield for a 5 p.m. conference game Monday, while BLHS is at Madelia on Saturday for a 10 a.m. game.

Madelia 7, LCWM 5

MADELIA — Madelia held off Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial 7-5 on Thursday in a Valley Conference baseball game.

Madelia was led by Tony Zaleski going 1 for 3 with a double and three RBIs, while Eric Anderson went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Kyle Pietsch went 1 for 2.

Zach Jacobs got the win on the mound going five innings, giving up four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six.

Madelia (7-1, 3-1) will play Martin County West on Friday.

BOYS TENNIS

New Ulm 6, Worthington 1

WORTHINGTON — New Ulm downed Worthington 6-1 on Thursday in a Big South Conference boys tennis meet.

Worthington’s lone win came at No. 1 singles as Ian Barber defeated Mav Johnson 1-6, 6-2, 10-1. At No. 2 singles, Charlie Weidman defeated Evan Hansberger 7-5, 6-0, while Gideon Heins defeated Dylan Dykstra 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. At No. 4 singles, Ian Schotzko beat Bennett Oberloh 6-1, 6-0.

Joey Kotten and Dan Brownfield defeated Lance Gordon and Caleb Barber 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, while Aaron Black and Ethan Neet defeated Kaw B lay and SoeNay Htoo 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, Isaac Dittmer and Eli Dorschner defeated Diego Ramos Loza and Daelen Sithad 6-1, 6-0.

New Ulm hosts Waseca on Tuesday.

BLHS boys 205, GFW boys 223

WINTHROP — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 205-223 Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference boys golf meet at Winthrop Golf Course.

Both teams were incomplete on the girls side of the meet.

Sawyer Melberg shot a 44 for BLHS to lead all golfers, with teammate Chase Hubin (46) and Evan Pierce (57) following.

Cole Jacobson led the Thunderbirds with a 51, followed by Lane Olson (62) and Carson Lee (68).

GFW’s Jenna Schweiss was the medalist for the girls, shooting a 56.

GFW hosts Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Monday.

PREP TRACK AND FIELD

MVL/NUC boys win Mike Vrklan Relay Invitational

ARLINGTON — The Minnesota Valley Lutheran/New Ulm Cathedral boys track and field team led all teams in the Mike Vrklan Relay Invitational at Sibley East High School, while Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop placed third.

The GFW girls team placed fourth, while the MVL/NUC girls team placed fifth out of eight teams.

For the Chargers boys team, Josh Bentler placed first in the 100 (11.39), while Kendrick Henry placed second in the 200 (23.98). Jeremy Feistner placed second in the 1,600 (4:58.36), and Will Kaesermann placed first in the 300-meter hurdles (44.62) The 4×100 relay team of Justin Thompson, Jaden Helget and Bentler placed first (44.72). Helget also won the boys pole vault (11-6) and Halvorson placed second in triple jump (38-11.25).

For the MVL/NUC girls team, Claudia Weisensel placed second in the 300-meter hurdles (52.04) and Mackenzie Frank placed second in shot put (30-5).

For the GFW boys, Alex Johnson and Ashton Buboltz took the first two spots in discus, recording throws of 143-10 and 127-8.5, respectively. Brennir Peterson placed second in high jump (5-8), and Garret Schmidt won the long jump (19-9)

For the Thunderbirds girls team, Kinley Bruns placed first in the 100 (13.29) and triple jump (29-3), while Ruth Messner placed first in the 400 (1:03.43).

There were also mixed relay events in the invitational. The MVL/NUC team of Adrian Henry, Avery Hahn, Joe Gillis and Ellie Kaesermann placed first in the 4×100 relay (56.97) and its team of Emily Brown, Ethan Schauland, Weisensel and Will Kaesermann won the 4×100 shuttle hurdle relay (1:16.20).

MVL/NUC competes at a New Ulm invitational on Tuesday, while GFW travels to St. James Area.
