New Ulm sets school points record in win over TCU

NEW ULM — It is not often that a high school boys basketball team scores 87 points and loses by 36 points.

New Ulm High School set a school record with 123 points in a 123-87 win over Tri-City United Tuesday night.

Colton Benson led New Ulm (11-6) with 40 points.

James Osborne added 25 and Nate Firle 23.

Luke Holicky led the Titans (8-9) with 34 points with Reggie Vosejpka scoring 32.

For New Ulm coach Matt Dennis, it was a case of being happy with the offense in the game, but not pleased with the defense, especially in the first half.

“I was really happy with the offensive output in first half,” Dennis said. “But we went into the locker room talking about how we have to play defense. When you score 59 points in the first half, you should be up 20.”

Instead the Eagles, who play at Worthington Friday, led 59-47 thanks to 21 first half points from Vosejpka. It was also a first half that saw New Ulm take a commanding 46-27 lead at the 7:29 mark that capped a 30-11 Eagles run that broke a 16-16 tie.

“Give credit to TCU,” Dennis said. “They kept coming — they knocked down some shots going to the rim. We knew they were capable of doing that.”

Baskets from Firle and Benson made it a 71-53 game before Osborne took over and scored 10 straight points for an 86-68 lead. An Easton Clark 3 sparked an 8-0 run before Benson canned a basket to hit the century mark with 6:37 left in the game.

A Will Fossen 3 made it a 105-78 game before a Gavin Epper 3 increased the lead to 112-81.

Treys from Epper and Brady Dennis and a Zach Fischer basket closed out the 123 point performance.

“I told the team after the game that they did something tonight that may never be touched [by a New Ulm team],” Dennis said. “It was a perfect storm for a game like this to happen. We had to stay on the gas playing offense because they were coming after us.”

This is the second time this season that the Eagles have scored 100 points or more. New Ulm scored 103 against New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva in the Bethany Kwik Trip Tournament.
