Sleepy Eye 70, Hayfield 66

HAYFIELD — Sleepy Eye defeated Hayfield 70-66 Saturday in a nonconference girls basketball game.

Brea Mertz led the Indians with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Kadence Hesse had 19 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals. Cadence Okerman added 11 points, three assists and two steals for Sleepy Eye.

Sleepy Eye (12-1) travels to Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Friday.

New Ulm places third in Winterfest Invitational

MARSHALL — New Ulm took third place out of seven teams at the Winterfest Gymnastics Invitational Saturday at Marshall high school.

Benson/Kerhoven-Murdock-Sunberg placed first with a 135.125 team score, while Redwood Valley placed second with a 132.625 team score. New Ulm scored 130.375 in third place.

New Ulm’s Josie Seller led New Ulm with the all-around score, earning a 33.5, good for fifth in the invitational. Josie Sellner placed a team-best sixth on bars (7.95), sixth on beam (8.325) ninth on the floor (8.7) and 15th on vault (8.525).

Avarey Sellner was New Ulm’s highest scorer in vault, placing seventh with a 8.675. Aurora Marazzina led the team on beam, placing third with a 8.8.
