TEL roundup: Mathiowetz slam helps Indians best Bluejays

SLEEPY EYE 9, ESSIG 8

ESSIG — Tyler Mathiowetz’s grand slam led the way for the Sleepy Eye Indians on Wednesday night as the Indians held off the Essig Bluejays 9-8 in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game.

Mathiowetz’s grand slam came in the eighth to put the Indians up 8-3 before a groundout by Cody Schultz gave Sleepy Eye a 9-3 lead. Essig rallied with two runs in the bottom of the eighth and three more in the bottom of the ninth, but reliever Jake Mielke got a strikeout and forced a double play to earn a save and end the game.

Nick Mielke got the win on the mound in six innings, allowing four hits and two walks for two earned runs while striking out two.

Matt Mielke led the Sleepy Eye bats, going 5 for 6, while Schultz was 2 for 4 with four RBIs.

Joey Schugel took the loss for Essig in one inning of work, allowing one hit and one walk for two runs, one earned. Josh Forstner was 2 for 2 with an RBI double to lead the Bluejays at the plate, while Zach Riederer was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Winsten Nienhaus was 2 for 5.

Sleepy Eye moved to 1-3 in the TEL, while Essig fell to 1-4.

GIBBON 7, ST. JAMES 6

ST. JAMES — The Gibbon Reds defeated the St. James Athletics 7-6 in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game on Wednesday.

Layton Hamre earned the win for the Reds, striking out seven and allowing two earned runs on five hits in five innings pitched. At the plate, Josh Wasmund was 3 for 4 with an RBI, while Dominic Rose was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Nolan Huiras, James Panning and Kaden Rieke each had two hits

Bransen Peterson took the loss for St. James, striking out two and allowing five earned runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings. At the plate, Reggie Blom was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Wyatt Haler was 2 for 4 with a run scored. Joe Hager had a hit and two RBIs.

Gibbon (2-2, TEL) plays at Essig on Wednesday, while St. James (2-2, TEL) hosts Springfield on Sunday.

SEARLES 14, STARK 8

STARK — The Searles Grizzlies defeated the Stark Longhorns 14-8 in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game on Wednesday.

Kolton Achman was the winning pitcher for Searles, striking out six and allowing four runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings. At the plate, Nathan Vance was 4 for 6 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Isaiah Rieser was 3 for 6 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Collin Helget, Colin Forstner and Graham Glaser each added two hits.

Dylan Klein took the loss for Stark, striking out two and allowing six runs on six hits in two innings. At the plate, Landry Folkens was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, while Merrick Mathiowetz was 3 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Nick Labat added two hits.

Searles (2-2, TEL) travels to play the Milroy Yankees on June 12 in an exhibition game, while Stark (2-2, TEL) hosts Lamberton on Sunday.

LAMBERTON 4 LEAVENWORTH 3 (10 INNINGS)

LAMBERTON — The Lamberton Long Sox defeated the Leavenworth Orioles 4-3 in 10 innings in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game on Wednesday.

Jake Wahl earned the win for Lamberton in one inning of work. Quintyn Vold made the start, striking out 12 and allowing one earned run in 6 2/3 innings. At the plate for the Long Sox, Wahl and Jack Hines each had two hits and two RBIs.

Mark Anderson made the start for the Orioles, striking out 11 while allowing one run in seven innings.

Lamberton (3-1, TEL) plays at Stark on Sunday, while Leavenworth (2-1, TEL) hosts Hanska on Wednesday.
