Knights roll by Thunderbirds behind Mathiowetz’s 34 points

WINTHROP — Morgan Mathiowetz led Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s past Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 74-45 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference girls basketball game.

Mathiowetz scored 34 points, with 23 of them in the first half. She hit nine 2-points shots, one 3-pointer and two free throws. She also wasn’t afraid to dish the ball off to her teammates when needed, nor go inside and battle for the ball.

Jenna Schweiss scored the first basket of the game to give GFW a 2-0 lead. Natalie Fischer passed the ball to Mathiowetz to tie the contest. Taylor Bauer fed the ball to Nicole Duehn which gave GFW a 4-2 lead. Mathiowetz answered with layup to tie it again.

Halle Bleick’s basket resulted in GFW’s final lead of the game. Mathiowetz answered with another basket for another tie at 6-6.

After that, St. Mary’s slowly started to pull away from GFW. GFW’s Taylor Bauer was fouled in the act of shooting. She hit two free throws which brought the Thunderbirds within 5 points, 16-11.

Mathiowetz responded with a 3. On the next play, she scored another basket to increase the St. Mary’s lead to 10 points, 21-11.

Late in the first half, Mathiowetz was involved in three consecutive plays. She scored on a fast-break layup, she was fouled and she hit the free throw. She scored again on another fast-break layup. On the next trip down the floor, Brynne Ibberson passed the ball to Mathiowetz, who was fouled and made the free throw.

Mathiowetz scored St. Marys’ final 2 points of the first half on a fast-break layup. Marti Jacobson made two of three free throws after she was fouled on a 3-point shot attempt to close out the half. The score was 42-26 for St. Mary’s at halftime.

Midway through the second half, Sidney Tauer passed the ball to Mathiowetz, who canned a 3-point shot. Two plays later, Mathiowetz scored on a left-handed layup.

Jenna Schweiss took a shot as the game was winding down. The ball came back to her and she scored. Bauer missed the front end of a 1-and-1 free throw shot. She redeemed herself on the next play when she stole the ball and scored on a fast-break layup for the 74-45 final score.

GFW travels to Wabasso for a 7:15 p.m. conference game on Tueday, while St. Mary’s hosts New Ulm Cathedral at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in conference play.
