NEW ULM — While New Ulm had several close sets, the Eagles only managed to come away with one match as Redwood Valley defeated New Ulm 6-1 in a Big South Conference boys tennis meet on Friday.
Wyatt Feucht and Thomas Lehne picked up the lone win for the Eagles, topping Yzykiel Rendon and Andri Geisser 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles.
“This is our third meet this week,” New Ulm head coach Pete Engeldinger said. “We had Worthington [Wednesday] and we had St. James on Monday, and we were off [our game] on Monday. We were missing a beat, we weren’t quite there. But we’re on today. We’re playing really good tennis against a really good team. That’s good to see.
“We didn’t play over the weekend — a lot of teams will have tournaments over the weekend, but we didn’t play last Saturday, and we got rained out on Friday. So we came out really tight on Monday, then all of a sudden we’re playing really well. You can see the energy was high during warmups.”
At No. 1 singles, Redwood Valley’s Zach Lundeen downed New Ulm’s Charlie Weidman 6-2, 6-2, while Rick Green defeated Dan Brownfield narrowly in a 7-5, 7-6 (4) match at No. 2 singles. No. 3 singles saw Zach Malecek win over Isaac Dittmer 6-2, 6-4, while Charlie Fox handed Griffin Lehne his first loss of the season 3-6, 6-0, 6-4.

“He had that first set, and then this guy [Fox] hit a second wind or another level, because at four singles — he hasn’t lost this year yet,” Engeldinger said. “But it’s a good meet all around.”
At No. 2 doubles, Dylan Anderson and Kaden Hicks defeated Ryan Johnson and Everett Brown 6-4, 7-6 (5), and Fletcher Leach and Ethan Keehl topped Hayden Owens and Cole Frederick 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.
New Ulm falls to 6-3 overall and travels to play at Hutchinson on Monday.
