Area roundup: Dreckman scores 1,000th career point in New Ulm win over Belle Plaine

GIRLS BASKETBALL

New Ulm 87, Belle Plaine 60

BELLE PLAINE — New Ulm’s Daviney Dreckman passed 1,000 career points during an 87-60 win over Belle Plaine on Thursday night in nonconference girls basketball action.

Dreckman finished with a team-high 22 points and added five rebounds and three steals. Brooklyn Lewis added 21 points, four rebounds and four steals for the Eagles, while Morgan Hulke had 15 points, three rebounds and three steals and Maddie Backer had 10 points, three rebounds and two steals.

New Ulm (2-0) travels to Willmar for a 3:45 p.m. Saturday game.

Springfield 59, RRC 46

SPRINGFIELD — Marissa Pabst led three Springfield players in double figures on Thursday night as the Tigers took down Red Rock Central 59-46 in nonconference girls basketball action.

Pabst finished with an 18-point, 12-rebound double-double and also had eight steals. Brooklyn Sturm had a double-double also for the Tigers, finishing with 16 points, 12 rebounds and four steals, while Emma Hauger had 14 points and four steals.

RRC was led by Taylor Lang’s 21 points, while Ella Erickson added 10 points.

Springfield (1-1) hosts Sleepy Eye on Tuesday night in Tomahawk Conference action.

Cedar Mountain 69,

RCW 56

RENVILLE — Cedar Mountain’s Aubrey Steffl finished an assist shy of a triple double on Thursday night as the Cougars defeated Renville County West 69-56 in a nonconference girls basketball game.

Steffl finished with 31 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and five steals, while Kendra Erickson had 18 points, 11 rebounds and three steals and Brooklyn Diehn had 9 points.

Cedar Mountain hosts Minnesota Valley Lutheran Friday night.

BOYS BASKETBALL

GFW 61, HLO/F 40

WABASSO — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop opened its season with a 61-40 win over Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda on Thursday night at a Wabasso boys basketball invite at Wabasso High School.

Cole Jacobson led the Thunderbirds in the win with 16 points, while Easton Taylor and Dominic Rose each added 14 points. Braylan Freitag also had 11 points for GFW.

GFW plays MACCRAY at 10 a.m. Saturday in Wabasso before hosting Sibley East on Thursday night.

Wabasso 66,

Lakeview 47

WABASSO — Wabasso ended its first day of its home invite with a 66-47 win over Lakeview in nonconference boys basketball action.

Noah Anderson led the Rabbits with 18 points, five assists and two steals, while Tavyn Larson had 11 points and five rebounds. Tristan Larson added 10 points, five rebounds and three blocks for the Rabbits, while Joe Liebl had 10 points, eight rebounds and seven assists and Ashton Rohlik had 7 points.

Wabasso continues its invite on Saturday morning.

Cleveland 52, Madelia 47

MADELIA — Cleveland overcame a 26-22 halftime deficit to top Madelia 52-47 on Thursday night in a Valley Conference boys basketball game.

Madelia was led by Kaydon Firchau’s 9 points.

Madelia hosts Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey at 7 p.m. Saturday.

BOYS HOCKEY

New Ulm 6, Marshall 1

MARSHALL — New Ulm stormed by Marshall 6-1 on Thursday in a Big South Conference boys hockey action.

The Eagles had six players find the net, with Keaton Weston scoring first less than two minutes into the game. Bryer Lang scored a minute later to put New Ulm up 2-0 before Austin Uecker scored 30 seconds after Lang’s goal to give New Ulm a 3-0 lead.

Marshall got its lone goal on a power-play goal by Chase Mellenthin in the first period.

Caleb Forstner scored in the second period for a 4-1 New Ulm lead before Brecken Neuman and Kaden Larson scored in the third for the final score.

Uecker, Lang and Ian Brudelie each had two assists also in the win, while Larson, Casey Koop, Kayden Klein and Brock Wellmann had an assist.

New Ulm (2-0) hosts Redwood Valley on Tuesday night.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Marshall 1, New Ulm 0

MARSHALL — Marshall’s power-play goal in the second period was enough to hold off New Ulm 1-0 on Thursday night in Big South Conference girls hockey action.

Ava Brennan had 27 saves in net for New Ulm, which travels to Hutchinson next on Tuesday.
