NEW ULM — Thursday night’s Demolition Derby drew a big crowd to the Brown County Fairground, with the grandstands being filled to near capacity for the five-category event.
The Youth, Midsize, Mighty Minis, 80s and Trucks all took to the pit to battle out which vehicle could last the longest in an all-out brawl.
Two of the competitors, brothers Michael and Anthony McDermott, finished first and second, respectively, in the Mighty Mini event.
Michael McDermott, the older brother, has been competing in derby events since 2005.
“My cousin decided he was going to injure himself in 2005,” Michael McDermott said. “And I got into his car, and it’s an addiction you just can’t quit.”

Anthony McDermott, who was celebrating his 33rd birthday Thursday, joined his brother in the pit in 2013.
“I just thought it looked fun,” he said. “So I tried it once, and didn’t get back out.”
Michael McDermott has won three of his five derbies this year. He always seems to get the better of his younger brother, who has yet to win a race.
“I’m always the first loser [laughs],” Anthony McDermott said.
Despite being brothers, neither McDermott sees the other as any different from other competitors.

“If he gets in the way, he’s getting hit,” Michael McDermott said. “And if I get in the way, I get hit. We have such similar driving styles that the opportunity doesn’t present itself very often, but when we do, you can see what happens [gestures to wrecked cars].”
No official final results were available at the time this edition of The Journal went to press.
The fair’s second Demo Derby will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday.
