SPRINGFIELD — Sleepy Eye and Springfield split a games in a Tomahawk Conference softball doubleheader in Springfield on Thursday. Sleepy Eye took the first game 5-3 and Springfield won the second 7-1.

In the first game, Katelyn Tauer picked up the win for the Indians in the circle. At the plate for Sleepy Eye, Lydia Helget hit a solo home run, while Paige Haala was 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Taylor Berkner had a homerun with 2 RBIs, and Jade Sellner had a hit for an RBI.

Jalivia Richert was handed the loss for the Tigers, getting eight strikouts and allowing five hits, three walks and three earned runs in a complete game. Jaeli Richert had an RBI triple and a run scored at the plate.

In the second game, Jaeli Richert earned the win for the Tigers, getting four strikouts and allowing two hits, three walks, and one earned run in a complete game. At the plate, Jaeli Richert also had three hits and two RBIs, while Brenna Pabst had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Jalivia Richert had two hits and an RBI with two runs scored.

Taylor Berkner had the loss for the Indians, with three strikouts and six earned runs.

Brooke Arneson had a hit for an RBI, and Jade Sellner also had a hit for Sleepy Eye.

Sleepy Eye will travel to New Ulm Cathedral for a doubleheader on Monday. Springfield will travel to Windom Area on Friday.

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s swept Minnesota Valley Lutheran in a Tomahawk Conference softball doubleheader on Thursday.

In the first game, Lacy Mathiowetz pitched all seven innings, walking one, allowing five hits and striking out 18 for the Knights. At the plate, Mathiowetz was 2 for 3, while Isabella Hoffmann had a hit and an RBI.

Becca Kuck pitched a complete game for the Chargers, allowing five hits, four earned runs, four walks and getting 11 strikouts. Kuck was 2 for 2 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored, while MacKenna Dressel had a double and a run scored. Ashlyn Rodewald had an RBI triple.

Hoffmann pitched the second game for the Knights, getting three strikouts and no hits in four innings, earning the win. Hoffmann also led the team at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a double and five RBIs. Mathiowetz was 2 for 4 with a triple, while Allie Labat and Alexa Pelzel and two RBIs.

St. Mary’s will travel to take on Sleepy Eye in a doubleheader on Thursday. MVL will host a doubleheader against New Ulm Cathedral on Thursday.

LCWM 10, Nicollet 0 (5 innings)

NICOLLET — Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial defeated Nicollet 10-0 in five innings in a Valley Conference softball game at Nicollet high school on Thursday.

Avery Voges earned the win for the Knights, getting 14 strikeouts and allowing one hit and one walk in five innings pitched. Voges also lead the team at the plate, getting three hits. Nettie Parson as Rilee Penkert had two RBIs each.

Leah Bode was handed the loss for the Raiders, getting four strikeouts and six earned runs. Bode also had the team’s only hit.

LCWM will travel to play Martin County West on Friday. Nicollet will travel to Jainsville-Waldorf-Pemberton on Friday.

Loyola/St. Clair 11,

Madelia 1 (6 innings)

MADELIA — Loyola/St. Clair took down Madelia 11-1 in six innings on Thursday in a Valley Conference softball game at Madelia.

Corban Tatro got the loss in the circle for the Blackhawks, getting 10 strikouts and one walk with 12 hits and six earned runs in six innings. At the plate for Madelia, Tatro had a hit, a walk, and the Blackhawks’ lone run scored. Makayla Sorenson also recorded a hit.

Madelia (3-6, 1-3) will play Saturday in a tournament at Caswell Park in against Springfield.

PREP BASEBALL

Wabasso 4, TMB 3

MILROY — Wabasso squeezed past Tracy-Milroy-Balaton in a nonconferece baseball game on Thursday in a game continued for a rain-suspension from April 14.

Joe Liebl got the win on the mound for the Rabbits, notching 10 strikouts in 5 1/3 innings pitched while allowing three earned runs and eight hits with one walk. At the plate, Kaysen Harms had two hits and an RBI for Wabasso, while Jaxon Wagner had two hits, including a double, and a stolen base. Joe Liebl had a hit for an RBI and two stolen bases.

Wabasso hosts a doubleheader against Springfield on Monday.

Madelia 3, GHEC/T/ML 1

MADELIA — Madelia defeated Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 3-1 on Thursday in a Valley Conference baseball game at Madelia.

Tate Becker picked up the win for the Blackhawks, getting 17 strikeouts and allowing four hits, no walks and one earned run in a complete game.

At the plate, Jake Lehman had two hits and two runs scored for Madelia, while Tony Zaleski had a hit for an RBI. Dylan Grev had a double and a walk in the game.

Madelia hosts Mountain Lake on Friday.

FAIRFAX — New Ulm Cathedral rolled past Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in both games of a Tomahawk Conference baseball doubleheader on Thursday, winning 9-0 in a Tomahawk Conference baseball game on Thursday.

Collin Anderson got the win for the Greyhounds in the first game, getting eight strikouts and allowing one hit and one walk in six innings pitched.

At the plate for Cathedral, Jake Finstad had two hits and an RBI, while Levi Franta had two doubles and an RBI.

Zachary Schwarzrock had the loss for the Thunderbirds, getting six strikeouts while giving up five hits, two walks and two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings pitched. Owen Swenson and Dylan Bernstein each had a hit in the game.

In the second game, Zach Paszkiewicz got the win for Cathedral, getting five strikouts and giving up three hits and one walk in five innings. Franta had three hits and three runs along with three RBIs, while Finstad had two hits. Carter Haala had two RBIs.

Lincoln Werner was handed the loss for GFW in two innings pitched, giving up three earned runs and getting two strikouts. Dominic Rose had a double at the plate.

Cathedral will host a doubleheader against Sleepy Eye on Monday. GFW will host a doubleheader against MVL on Monday.

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye swept Springfield in a Tomahawk Conference baseball doubleheader on Thursday at Sleepy Eye, winnings 11-1 in the first game in five innings and 4-3 in the second game.

In the first game, Arian Saenz earned the win on the mound for Sleepy Eye, getting five strikouts and allowing three hits, two walks and one earned run in five innings. On offense, Marcus Martinez had two hits and two RBIs, while Saenz, Nick Mielke and Cody Schultz each had two RBIs.

For the Tigers, Jakob Nachreiner had the loss with two strikouts and eight earned runs in 3 1/3 innings pitched. At the plate, Jacob Nachreiner had a hit, along with Ashtin Johnson and Chase Groebner.

In the second game, Mielke started for the Indians with seven strikeouts and seven hits allowed, with no walks or earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. Winsten Nienhaus picked up the win in 1 2/3 innings with two strikouts and no hits or walks. At the plate, Austin Uecker had a hit and an RBI, while Caden Evers and Jake Price had a double apiece.

Kade Nachreiner had the loss for the Tigers, with four strikouts, six hits, one walk and two earned runs. On offense, Luke Boyle had two hits and an RBI, while Danny Rogotzke had two hits. Sam Rummel had a hit and an RBI.

Sleepy Eye will host Red Rock Central on Friday. Springfield will host RRC at 7 p.m. on Friday.

PREP GOLF

GFW boys 226, BLHS 257

WINTHROP — The Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop boys golf team topped Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 226-257 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference golf meet at Winthrop Golf Course.

Both girls teams were incomplete.

BLHS’s Sawyer Belberg was the boys medalist, shooting a 46. GFW was led by Nate TenEyke and Colton Howe, who both shot a 53. GFW’s Cole Jacobson shot a 58, while Carson Lee carded a 62.

Following Melberg on the BLHS boys team was Evan Pierce, who shot a 57.

The GFW girls saw Jenna Schweiss shoot a 49 to finish as the medalist, while teammate Nicole Sievert shot a 66. BLHS’s lone girl golfer at the meet was Ava Albrecht, who shot a 70.

BUFFALO LAKE — The New Ulm boys and girls golf teams competed in a Big South Conference golf meet on Thursday at Oakdale Golf Course, with Will Fossen leading the Eagles on the day.

Fossen shot an 83 to lead the New Ulm boys and finish fourth overall, while teammates Mason Buegler carded an 88 for fifth, Brayden Wendinger shot a 90 for sixth and Gavin Epper shot a 91 for seventh.

Katie Wilker led the New Ulm girls with a 103 to finish fourth overall, while teammates Elyse Dreckman finished seventh with a 106 and Brooklyn Hagberg shot a 113 to tie for ninth.

MVL boys 181,

SEU girls 202

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye United, MVL and Wabasso competed in a Tomahawk Conference golf triangular on Thursday at Sleepy Eye. The MVL boys finished with a score of 181 and the SEU girls finished with a score of 202. The other teams were incomplete.

Top finishers for the girls were SEU’s Sam Price with a 48, SEU’s Kiara Murphy and Liz Schwint who tied for second with a 40, Wabasso’s Chloe Rohlik with a 51, and SEU’s Meriden Andres with a 54. Top finishers for the boys were SEU’s Carson Erickson with a 40, MVL’s Ben Pearson with a 41, SEU’s Kaleb Weiss with a 42, MVL’s Nathaniel Lukasek with a 44, and MVL’s James Osterman with a 45.

MEN’S GOLF

Hansen leads MLC men at Knights Invitational

NEW ULM — The Martin Luther College men’s golf team returned to action on Thursday with its annual Knights Invitational at New Ulm Country Club. The Knights’ last match was in the beginning of October when MLC competed at the UMAC championships.

On Thursday, MLC was led by transfer Sam Hansen, who took first out of 37 golfers with his 18-hole score of 72.

The Knights’ main team also featured Malakai Dunn (78), who matched his career-high in 18 holes. Titus Doletzky (90), Paul Frick (91), and Jordan Otto (91) rounded out the team.

MLC also played a second team, which was led by Austin Schwab (84) and Noah Bickelhaupt (88).

The Knights finished as a team with a team score of 423, giving them fourth place in the team competition. North Central won the tournament with a score of 317 strokes, followed by Bethany Lutheran (319), and Crown (416).

PREP TRACK AND FIELD

MVL/NUC boys take 3rd at Vrklan Relays

ARLINGTON — The Minnesota Valley Lutheran/New Ulm Cathedral boys track and field team finished third (62) out of eight teams at the Mike Vrklan Relays on Thursday at Sibley East High School.

The MVL/NUC girls finished sixth out of eight teams with 38 points.

The Redwood Valley boys finished first with 68.5 points, while the Sibley East girls took first with 92.

Leading the MVL/NUC boys was Ben Halvorson (200-meter dash, 24.57, second; triple jump 40-04.5), Josh Thompson (400, 57.31, second), Will Kaesermann (300 hurdles, 43.86, first; triple jump, 40-06, first), Jaden Helget (pole vault, 10-0, first).

The MVL/NUC mixed 4×100 shuttle hurdle relay team of Claudia Weisensel, Kaesermann, Emily Brown and Ethan Schauland finished first with a time of 1:19.68.

The Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop boys also competed at the Relays, with Justin Messner taking first in the 100 (12.3) and third in the 200 (24.62), Garrett Schmidt taking second in the 300 hurdles (43.9) and first in the long jump (19-02.5) and Alex Johnson taking second in the shot put (42-06) and first in the discus (150-07).

The MVL/NUC girls were led by Averyelle Hopp (100, 13.61, second; 200, 28.47, second; long jump, 14-08.75, second). Weisensel finished second in the 300 with a 52.69.

The Sibley East girls saw Bridget Biron take second in the 400 (1:07.31), Ruby Ballalatak take first in the 1,600 (5:42.27) and Paige Gardiner take second in the 3,200 (13:29.94). The Sibley East girls 4×400 relay team of Karcyn Dose, Emme Eccles, Biron and Ballalatak took first with a time of 4:26.20, while the girls DMR 4,000 team of Biron, Dose, Anna Harens and Gardiner took first (7:46.40).

The Sibley East girls also saw Holly Otto take first in the shot put (32-02), while Abigail Kuehn took second (29-03). Otto also took first in the discus (99-05), while Kuehn took second in the discus (86-0). Sibley East’s Mara Latzke took first in the triple jump (29-08.5), and Dose took second in the triple jump (28-04).
