Sleepy Eye eliminates JWP
SLEEPY EYE — After a slow start, the 21-6, second-seeded Sleepy Eye Indians eliminated Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton with a 64-27 win in a Section 2A, South Subsection girls basketball tournament game Tuesday night at Sleepy Eye High School.
“We were a little heavy on turnovers tonight,” Sleepy Eye head coach Sarah Hesse said. “We had the tournament jitters at first.”
Sleepy Eye led 6-0 with junior Kadence Hesse canning a jumper, junior Brea Mertz hitting a layup and blocking a shot. The seventh-seeded Bulldogs got within 6-3 on freshman Katelyn Olson’s layup.
The Indians, who have no seniors, scored the next 24 points and never looked back. It was 34-7 at halftime.
The Bulldogs used a full-court press at times to help them get some turnovers, but cold shooting plagued them.
Sleepy Eye responded with many layups, racing up the floor much of the game.
Hesse finished with 30 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and three assists. Mertz finished with 14 rebounds, 14 points and seven blocks. Cadence Okerman had 9 points and three rebounds. Paige Haala had 4 points, four assists and four rebounds.
The Indians play third-seeded Mountain-Lake Area at 7:45 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter High School.
