Knights roll Greyhounds
SLEEPY EYE — Top-seeded Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s had four players in double figures Tuesday night, rolling to an 83-23 win over No. 9-seeded New Ulm Cathedral in a Section 2A, South Subsection girls basketball playoff game at at St. Mary’s High School.
The Knights were led by their seniors Allie Labat and Liz Schwint. Labat had a game-high 27 points to go with three rebounds and three steals, while the 6-foot Schwint had 18 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Schwint finished the first half with 14 points, with 10 points coming in the paint.
“This year has been totally different now,” Schwint said. “I know my role and I know I have to score because if I score, it opens up shots for outside people. And my confidence is higher than it’s ever been.”
Natalie Fischer added 17 points and three boards for the Knights, while Morgan Mathiowetz had an all-around performance with 10 points, seven assists, six steals and four rebounds.
The Knights were quick out of the gate with a 10-0 run, finished off on a Labat 3 and a post-move finish inside by Schwint.
Jenna Hotovec’s free throw got the Greyhounds on the board. She later hit a 3 to have her team down 12-6, but Labat answered with a pair of free throws and a 3 to put the Knights back in front by double digits.
Hotovec ended the first half with 9 points, but she was kept out of the scoring column in the second half and finished the game with a team-high 9 points. Margo Finstad added 6 points for Cathedral on the night.
After Shay Wilfahrt scored on a layup to break a 7-0 Knights run and have Cathedral down 26-11, Fischer sank back-to-back 3s to kick-start an 11-0 run to put the Knights up 37-11.
The Knights led 47-14 at halftime.
Olivia Macho scored the first two buckets of the second half for the Greyhounds, but the Knights quickly continued to create more distance.
After a 3 by Finstad, St. Mary’s closed the game on a 25-0 run. Kylie Pelzel, Olivia Schieffert and Brynne Ibberson entered off the bench to finish that run with 11 combined points in the final seven minutes.
“From the beginning of the season to now, our team has grown so much,” Schwint said. “We have four players that can consistently score the ball and we’re playing really good team basketball.”
The Knights improved to 21-6 with the win and will take on fourth-seeded Springfield at 6 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter High School in a Section 2A quarterfinals game.
The Greyhounds finished their season with an 8-20 record.
