Area roundup: Eagles take down St. Clair at BLC

BOYS BASKETBALL

New Ulm 64, St. Clair 56

MANKATO — New Ulm defeated St. Clair 64-56 on Tuesday in a boys basketball game at the 24th Kwik Trip Holiday Basketball Tournament at Bethany Lutheran College.

Colton Benson led New Ulm with 27 points, while Nate Firle had 24 points.

New Ulm continues play in the winner’s bracket of the tournament at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Maple River 83, MVL 64

MANKATO — Maple River defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran 83-64 Tuesday in boys basketball action at the 24th Kwik Trip Holiday Basketball Tournament at Bethany Lutheran College.

Will Kaesermann led MVL with 16 points, while Cole Thompson had 15.

MVL falls to the loser’s bracket where it will play an 8 p.m. game Wednesday at Younge Gym at BLC.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

LQPV 57, Sleepy Eye 52

MARSHALL — Lac Qui Parle Valley held off Sleepy Eye 57-52 at a girls basketball invite at Southwest Minnesota State University on Tuesday.

Kadence Hesse led the Indians with 27 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals, while Brea Mertz had 12 points and three rebounds. Also for Sleepy Eye, Paige Haala had 6 points and seven boards, while Jazzibelle Martinez had 5 points.

Sleepy Eye plays Minneota at SMSU at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

NRHEG 80, MVL 38

NEW RICHLAND — New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva downed Minnesota Valley Lutheran 80-38 in girls basketball action on Tuesday night.

Ella Mullenbach led the Chargers in the loss with 14 points, while Becca Kuck had 9 points and Mackenzie Merseth had 6 points.

MVL continues play in the NRHEG Invite on Wednesday with a 5:30 p.m. game against St. James.

RTR 60, Wabasso 51

MARSHALL — Russell Tyler Ruthton topped Wabasso 60-51 on Tuesday at a girls basketball invite at Southwest Minnesota State University.

Wabasso was led by Kelsey Frank’s 14 points and four assists, while Anistasia Smith had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Sophia Hanna had 10 points.

Wabasso next takes on Canby at 5 p.m. Wednesday at SMSU.

MLA 43, Springfield 34

SPRINGFIELD — Mountain Lake Area beat Springfield 43-34 on Tuesday in a nonconference girls basketball game.

Springfield was led by Brooklyn Sturm’s 10 points, six rebounds and three steals, while Marissa Pabst had 8 points and Maddy Digmann had 7 points and four rebounds.

MLA was led by Brooke Naas’ 12 points.

Springfield (2-3) hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Jan. 3.

BOYS HOCKEY

Fergus Falls 3, New Ulm 3

FERGUS FALLS — Fergus Falls tied New Ulm 3-3 Tuesday in a boys hockey game at the Fergus Falls Holiday Classic.

All goals were scored in the first period.

Taylor Hansen, Dawson Kraus and Bryer Lang each scored goals for New Ulm, while Kraus, Jack Albrecht and Nick Zins adding assists. Bryer Hoffmann stopped 25 shots in net for the Eagles, who outshot Fergus Falls 30-28 on the night.

Fergus Falls was 3 for 4 on the power play, while New Ulm was 0 for 3.

New Ulm continues play in the Classic against Detroit Lakes at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Apple Valley 8, New Ulm 2

APPLE VALLEY — Despite New Ulm holding an early 2-1 lead, Apple Valley responded with seven unanswered goals on the way to an 8-2 win in a nonconference girls hockey game Tuesday.

Tristyn Wolner’s goal 6:17 into the first period tied the game at 1-all for New Ulm before Jada Rahe scored 14:14 into the first to give New Ulm the 2-1 lead. Apple Valley scored two goals a little more than a minute apart after that in the first period, however, to take the lead back for good.

Apple Valley outshot New Ulm 39-25.

Ava Brennan took the loss for New Ulm in net. Ava Schmid played the third period in net for New Ulm.

New Ulm next takes on St. Cloud Tech at Bernick’s Arena in Sartell at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
