ARLINGTON — While the third-seeded New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds’ persistency caused second-seeded BOLD some headaches Tuesday night at Sibley East High School, the Warriors were able to hold on for a 25-16, 22-25, 25-18, 25-20 win in the Section 2A, North Subsection volleyball semifinals.
Cathedral ends its season with a 21-5 overall record, while BOLD (22-4) next takes on top-seeded Mayer Lutheran at Mankato East High School in the Section 2A semifinals Thursday.
The Greyhounds took early leads in all four sets, taking a 4-1 lead in the opening set before the Warriors shook off the rust and took a 9-6 lead after a 4-0 run. Cathedral stayed within striking distance until late in the set, and the Warriors took the first set on a kill from Mari Ryberg.
After the Greyhounds took a 5-1 lead in Set 2, BOLD got a 5-0 run to take the lead, getting a kill and two blocks from Grace Tersteeg during the run. BOLD took a 21-19 lead to force Cathedral to burn a timeout.
A kill from Sydnee Helget and a block from Kiah Helget tied the set at 22-all before an attack error put the Greyhounds in front and forced BOLD to burn a timeout. After a kill from Megan Haala, the Greyhounds ended the set when Sydnee Helget found an opening just inside the attack line for the kill and set point.
BOLD controlled most of the third set, taking an early 10-4 lead after a kill from Mackenzie Visser. BOLD stretched its lead to 21-12 later before the Greyhounds clawed back to trail 23-18. A kill apiece from Adyson Knake and Ryberg ended the set soon after.
Set 4 looked to be firmly in BOLD’s hands after a 9-2 run gave the Warriors a late 20-9 lead. But the Greyhounds had other plans, getting an 8-0 run that was capped off on a kill by Lily Brennan to trail 20-17.
BOLD increased its lead to 24-19 after that before a kill by Sydnee Helget kept hope alive for Cathedral. But a kill from Tersteeg ended Cathedral’s season moments later and moved BOLD on to Thursday.
Knake ended up leading BOLD with 16 kills, while Ryberg had 12 kills.
Cathedral was led by Sydnee Helget’s 20 kills, while Brennan had 10 kills and 23 digs, Megan Haala had 10 kills and 25 digs and Annie Edwards had 39 set assists and 11 digs.
