SPRINGFIELD — While many at Riverside Park kept their eye on the sky for expected storms Monday, Regan Beadell kept her eye on the plate and the Springfield Tigers kept their eye on the ball.

Beadell allowed just two hits and three walks from the circle and the Tigers drew 17 walks at the plate on the way to a 10-0 win over the Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop Firebirds in a Tomahawk Division softball game.

The game ended in five innings due to the 10-run lead rule.

Beadell pitched all five innings in the win and struck out eight. The right-hander ran into some trouble by loading the bases in the first with no outs, but she was quick to correct course with three consecutive strikeouts to get out of the jam.

Beadell said getting out of that early jam came down to just focusing on hitting her spots.

“I missed on the first couple, so I was just trying to battle back,” Beadell said. “I was pretty much just hitting my spots [after that].”

The Firebirds were feeling good in that first inning when Addison Donnay and Micahl Nachreiner walked, bringing Lauren Schafer to the plate, who dropped a single between a couple of Springfield fielders to load the bases.

Beadell zoned in after that, however, striking out the next three batters swinging.

“She was just missing and then she came around and took command and got ahead in counts, which is key for her,” Tigers head coach Katie Wilhelmi said. “I was really proud of how she worked and she battled back a couple different times.”

Donnay took the loss in three innings for GFW, giving up two hits and 13 walks for seven earned runs while striking out three. Ellison Fitzpatrick pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and four walks for five earned runs while striking out one.

GFW’s other hit came off the bat of Nachreiner in the second after Megan Hamre was hit by a pitch with two outs. A walk to Donnay gave the Firebirds a bases-full chance again, but second baseman Olivia Sprenger fielded a grounder and flipped it to Isabella Groebner at second for the force to end the threat.

Makay Winkelmann led the Tigers at the plate, going 2 for 2 with two walks, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Abby Groebner was 2 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored and Beadell was 1 for 1 with three RBIs, three walks and a run scored, Jada Reese had two walks and three RBIs and Kendall Krueger had three walks and three runs scored. Sprenger ended the game in the fifth with a liner to left to score Winkelmann.

Springfield’s big win came down to being patient at the plate and trusting Beadell to find her spots.

“It feels good and it’s definitely a team-atmosphere thing,” Beadell said. “They’re a huge part of just the way that I pitch. And just them supporting me and backing me up on the offensive side.”

The Tigers’ first run of the game came in the first on a wild pitch that scored Krueger and walked Beadell. In the second, bases-loaded walks to Winkelmann, Jada Reese and Beadell made it 4-0.

The Tigers made it 7-0 in the fourth on another bases-loaded walk by Reese and an two-run single to left by Beadell.

The Tigers led off the bottom of the fifth with a single by Abby Groebner before Krueger walked to bring up Winkelmann, who singled down the third-base line. Winkelmann took second on the throw in. A groundout gave Reese her third RBI of the day and made it 9-0. GFW intentionally walked Beadell and Teagan Steffl to bring up Sprenger, whose line-drive hit to left ended the game.

While three games is a small sample size, the Tigers’ win over GFW gave them a 3-0 start to the season after starting last year 1-2 and finishing 6-17.

“Last year was just kind of more of a building year for us,” Wilhelmi said. “Prior to that, we were like top four in the section, so it was a little different last year, but we’ve gotten a few girls that — there are some younger girls that are bringing some intensity and bring some extra competitiveness to practice, which is really awesome to see.”

Springfield (3-0, 3-0) hosts Windom Area in a nonconference game on Tuesday, while GFW (0-3) hosts Sleepy Eye in a Tomahawk softball doubleheader on Thursday in Winthrop.
