NEW ULM — Shoppers lined up outside the New Ulm Civic Center before the citywide garage sale opened Saturday.
“At 8 a.m., this place was packed. I come here every year,” said antique dealer Scott Gilsrud of Redwood Falls. “A guy from the Minneapolis bought $350 worth of comics after seeing what I posted on Facebook.”
He also brought recordings of movies and television shows, photos of movie and television actors.
Gilsrud sells comics, records, cameras, magazines and other antiques at Antiques Plus, Wednesday through Saturday at Antiques Plus, 28 N. Minnesota St., downtown New Ulm.
He also enjoys selling antiques at Spirit Lake, Iowa and Wright County in Minnesota flea markets.
“Vinyl records interest recently came back. People love flipping through my record albums,” said Gilsrud. “People want albums by ‘Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin and the Beatles.’ They’ll sell all day long.”
Doug Steffl of Comfrey bought an album by The Knaak, an American power pop band that blended pop melodies with new wave rock, dominating record charts in 1979. They were best known for “My Sharona” that sold six million records and album “Get the Knack.”
Andrea Weier of New Ulm said she sold lots of children’s clothes for $1 each and children’s books for 25 cents at the sale.
“I saw a long line of people here early. Clothes, boys and books all went very, very well,” she said.
Melody Uhler of St. Peter was selling office items.
“It’s been great. I love it. This is my fourth year here. My husband just retired so we brought a lot of office stuff,” she said.
Vintage re-seller Annie Gibson of Truman bought items from Uhler. Gibson operates Just For Peanuts Vintage Resale Shop that can be found on Facebook.
“I sell on three online platforms. I have vintage décor, unique and fun antiques. I’d love to sell here in October,” she said.
The garage sale featured 51 vendors. New Ulm Park & Recreation Program Supervisor Ben Doeden said there was a long wait list of applications from families that wanted to participate. As the event continues to grow, the City of New Ulm is exploring new ways to house more vendors.
