Area roundup: GFW softball downs Sibley East in 6

WINTHROP — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop ran away with an 11-1 win over Sibley East on Friday in a six-inning nonconference softball game.

The Thunderbirds were led by Morgan Aylsworth at the plate, who went 2 for 2 with two runs scored, an RBI and two walks. Halle Bleick also went 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs for GFW, while Lexi Schweiss was 2 for 3 with an RBI, Cheyenne Schmidt was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Brooklyn Werner was 2 for 4. Werner also earned the win in the circle in all six innings, striking out seven and allowing one earned run on five hits and three walks.

Sibley East was led at the plate by Morgan Bednarek’s 2-for-3 game, which included a triple and an RBI.

GFW hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart at 5 p.m. on Monday.

BLHS 9, Madelia 8

St. James 18, Madelia 1

MANKATO — Madelia dropped a pair of softball games at the Caswell Park tournament on Friday, falling to Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 9-8 in seven innings and St. James 18-1 in five innings.

In the loss to BLHS, Corban Tatro took the loss in 6 2/3 innings, giving up 10 hits and seven walks for five earned runs. She struck out eight. She also had a double, while Abby Jacobs was 3 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs and Ashlynn Sweet was 2 for 3.

For BLHS, Emilie Hable was 2 for 4 with a homer, a double and two RBIs, while Tori Schmalz was 2 for 5 with a homer.

In the loss to St. James, Emma Coil was tagged with the loss in the circle, allogwing 15 hits and five walks for 17 earned runs. She struck out four. She also had one of Madelia’s four hits at the plate along with Tatro, Veronica Ibeling and Kellie Koberoski.

Madelia (4-6) continues its time in the tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday, weather permitting.

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye United boys’ golf team defeated Cedar Mountain and Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart in a rainy and windy Tomahawk Conference golf meet on Friday.

Carson Erickson of SEU was the medalist with a 42, while SEU’s Kaleb Weiss finished second with a 45. Blake Schueller led Cedar Mountain with a 48.

Cedar Mountain saw its girls team defeat SEU 220-228. Cedar Mountain’s Keanna Hultquist was the medalist with a 49, while teammate Morgan Engholm followed with a 50. SEU was led by Sam Price (51) and Chloe Walter (52).

Marshall boys 151, New Ulm 176, Worthington 186

MARSHALL — The Marshall boys’ and girls’ golf teams won a Big South Conference triangular golf meet on Friday, with the New Ulm boys’ team taking second and the New Ulm girls’ team finishing third.

The New Ulm boys were led by Will Fossen’s 41, while Evan Griebel shot a 42 and Jake Webb shot a 43. The New Ulm girls were led by Kate Frauenholtz’s 47, while Paige Dreckman shot a 51 and Katie Wilker shot a 57.

College softball

BLC 14, MLC 0

UWS 9, MLC 5

MANKATO — The Martin Luther College softball team battled the elements on a Friday in which it lost 14-0 to Bethany Lutheran College (BLC) and 9-5 to UW-Superior (UWS) at the second UMAC crossover weekend hosted by BLC.

In MLC’s first game against BLC, the Vikings scored at least once in each of their four times at bat, including five-run innings in the second and fourth frames off MLC starting pitcher Madison Uhlenbrauck (4-12), who took the loss in the circle.

The Knights’ offense was also held down in their times at bat as Elena Hoffman and Emmalee Mindock produced the team’s two hits.

In the loss to UWS, Lisa Hoffer led MLC with a pair of hits, while Jordyn Heckendorf scored two runs. Jessica Horn (4-11) went the distance in the circle in defeat, allowing nine runs (six earned) on eight hits.

MLC fell to 10-24 overall and 5-15 in UMAC play following the two defeats. The Knights are hopeful to finish the regular season at the crossover event Saturday, with a game against Northland College if weather and field conditions allow it.
