Cougars shut out Eagles in Section 3A title game

MANKATO — Mankato East/Loyola outshot New Ulm 23-5 in the second period and scored four goals as the Cougars downed New Ulm 6-0 Wednesday night for the Section 3A boys’ hockey championship at the Mankato Clinic Health System Event Center.
Parker Anthony scored two goals for the Cougars (17-10-1), who qualified for the state tournament with the win.
New Ulm ends their season at 21-7.
After a scoreless first period that saw a potential goal from New Ulm’s Kaden Larson waved off, East/Loyola dominated the second period with four goals.
Christian Theuninck made it 1-0 when he beat New Ulm goalie Dawson Sellner at the 3:19 mark of the second period.

The Cougars made it 2-0 at the 11:43 mark off a Rafe Bowman goal before goals two minutes apart from Anthony and Andrew Bastian upped the Cougars lead to 4-0.
Shea Gavin increased the lead to 5-0 at the 4:31 mark of the third period before Anthony scored his second goal of the game with less than a minute left in the game.
