SPRINGFIELD 10, PIPESTONE 3

ST. JAMES — Springfield defeated Pipestone 10-3 in the opening round of the DII Southwest Sub-State Legion Baseball Tournament on Thursday.

Adiel Trevino earned the win for Springfield, striking out four and allowing one run on two hits in three innings of work. At the plate, Eli Trevino had two hits and an RBI, while Adiel Trevino had a hit and two RBIs. Aiden Moriarty and Leo Hovland each had a hit, an RBI and two runs scored.

Springfield advances to play Luverne Friday at 5 p.m. in St. James.

SLEEPY EYE 3, SLAYTON 1

ST. JAMES — Sleepy Eye downed Slayton 3-1 in the opening round of the DII Southwest Sub-State Legion Baseball Tournament on Thursday.

Landry Folkens got the win on the mound for Sleepy Eye, striking out six and allowing one unearned run on four hits in seven innings. At the plate, Tyler Mathiowetz had two hits and a run scored, while Merrick Mathiowetz had an RBI. Karter Haala had a hit and a run scored.

Sleepy Eye advances to play St. James Friday at 8 p.m. in St. James.

VFW BASEBALL

NEW ULM 10, HUTCHINSON 5

MANKATO — Fourth-seeded New Ulm topped eighth-seeded Hutchinson 10-5 in a District 2 VFW Baseball Tournament elimination bracket game on Thursday.

Owen Drill earned the win on the mound, striking out seven and allowing no runs on three hits in 4 2/3 innings. At the plate, Owen Drill, Chase Wilson and Ethan Drill each had two hits, an RBI and two runs scored, while Wyatt Hanson had a hit and two RBIs.

New Ulm played Sleepy Eye VFW later in the day.

NEW PRAGUE 5, SLEEPY EYE 2

MANKATO — Second-seeded New Prague defeated sixth-seeded Sleepy Eye 5-2 in a District 2 VFW Baseball Tournament game on Thursday.

Mason Mathiowetz took the loss for Sleepy Eye, striking out three and allowing five runs on 12 hits in six innings. At the plate, Mathiowetz was 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Grayson Hansen had two hits and a run scored. Jalen Brandl had a hit and a run scored.

Sleepy Eye played New Ulm VFW in the elimination bracket later in the day.

NEW ULM 8, SLEEPY EYE 5

MANKATO — Fourth-seeded New Ulm downed sixth-seeded Sleepy Eye 8-5 in a District 2 VFW Baseball Tournament elimination bracket game on Thursday.

Owen Drill earned the win for New Ulm, striking out two and allowing three runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings. At the plate, Wyatt Hansen was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while B Johnson was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Ethan Drill added a hit and two RBIs.

Jalen Brandl took the loss for Sleepy Eye, striking out three and allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits in five innings of work. At the plate, Mason Mathiowetz was 3 for 3, while Anden Braun was 3 for 3 with three runs scored. Brandl had two hits and two runs scored, and Cooper Walter had a hit and three RBIs.

New Ulm advances to play third-seeded Mankato National Friday at 10 a.m. at Mankato East High School.
