Springfield 57, Sleepy Eye 6

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield ran away with a 57-6 win over Sleepy Eye on Friday night in Southwest District, East Subdistrict football action.

The Tigers were led by Brendon Buerkle, who threw for 257 yards and seven touchdowns while also rushing for a TD. Ashtin Johnson added 100 yards rushing for the Tigers, while Carter Olson had five catches for 87 yards and two TDs. MaCoy Krick also caught two TD passes for Springfield, while Ashton Toll had two TD receptions, Isaak Lothert had one TD reception and Kaden Rosenstengel had one rushing TD.

Caleb Hauger led the Springfield defense with 11 tackles, while Sam Pidde recovered a fumble and Adam Veerkamp, Sam Rummel, Lothert, Mitchell Streich and Charlie Pesghes each recorded a sack.

Sleepy Eye caught its TD on a 17-yard pass from Caden Evers to Cody Schultz in the fourth quarter.

Springfield (5-1) is at Martin County West on Thursday, while Sleepy Eye (1-5) hosts Tracy-Milroy-Balaton on Friday.

Waseca 38, New Ulm 6

WASECA — Waseca downed New Ulm 38-6 on Friday night in a South Central District, White Subdistrict football game.

Dylen Carreon ran for 95 yards and a TD on 24 carries to lead New Ulm. Carreon also led the defense with seven tackles, while Logan Kletscher and Marqavion Haefner each had six tackles.

New Ulm (0-6) hosts Belle Plaine on Friday.

GHEC/T/ML 62, Madelia 14

GRANADA — Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther rolled to a 62-14 win over Madelia on Friday night in 9-man South District, West Subdistrict football action.

Carter Forez had a 4-yard TD run for Madelia, while Logan Slater had a 6-yard TD run. Slater also had a two-point conversion run and finished with 33 rushing yards on 11 carries.

Jed Altenburg had six total tackles for Madelia on defense.

Madelia (0-6) hosts Mountain Lake Area on Friday.

Prep Volleyball

RRC 3, Wabasso 0

LAMBERTON — Red Rock Central swept Wabasso 25-13, 25-21, 25-16 on Friday afternoon in nonconference volleyball action.

Ashlyn Daub and Alivia Olson led Wabasso with seven kills apiece, while Kelsey Frank added 20 set assists and three aces. Kelsey Fischer added four kills for the Rabbits, while Audrey Johnson and Natasha Doubler each had seven digs.

Wabasso is at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Tuesday.

College Volleyball

MLC 3, Crown 0

NEW ULM — The Martin Luther College volleyball team was in control throughout a 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-13) sweep of Crown College on Friday.

Nine different MLC players recorded a kill in the match, with Kelsey Birschbach leading the way with 10 kills.

Setters Kylie Wolf (18 assists) and Anna Treder (13 assists) contributed to the attack, but also finished with three service aces apiece.

Kate Aswege led the Knights with eight digs in two sets, while Hannah Foley put together a strong performance at libero in the final set and finished the match with six digs.

MLC improved to 6-10 on the season and 5-1 in UMAC play with the win.

The Knights will return to action Saturday when they host Minnesota Morris.

Prep Football

RCW 28, CM 6

RENVILLE — Renville County West topped Cedar Mountain 28-6 on Thursday night in 9-man prep football action.

Caden Kleinschmidt scored the Cougars’ lone TD on a run of 25 yards. He ended with four carries for 31 yards, while Cooper Freitag ran for 36 yards on 12 rushes and threw for 89 yards on 10-of-22 passing. Nick Freitag had four catches for 42 yards also for the Cougars, while Kleinschmidt had five catches for 38 yards.

Maverick Weber led the Cougars’ defense with nine total tackles, while Tanner Mathiowetz added a sack.
