NEW ULM — David Wilfahrt’s two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Noah Wilmes and Jacob Berg and lifted New Ulm Cathedral to a big 6-5 win over BOLD Friday night in a nonconference baseball game at Johnson Park.

The two runs in the home half of the seventh capped a six-run comeback by Cathedral in the game.

The Greyhounds trailed the Warriors (12-5) by a 5-0 score after four innings.

Kyle Seidl got the win in relief for Cathedral, now 15-3. Seidl relieved Greyhounds’ starter Sam Knowles, who went the first five innings. Knowles allowed all five runs on eight hits. He also hit four batters.

Braden Tersteg took the loss for BOLD.

Noah Wilmes, Jacob Berg, Wilfahrt and Justin Berg each had two hits for Cathedral with Wilfahrt driving in three runs.

“This was a big win for us,” Cathedral coach Alan Woitas said. “This was a game won as a team from top to bottom.”

But for the first five innings, it looked like BOLD, who came in a few points ahead of the Greyhounds for the top spot in the Section 2A QRF ratings, were going to secure that top spot.

BOLD jumped on Knowles for a run in the first on a triple from Tersteg and an RBI double from Zeke Walton.

The Warriors added another run in the second on a single, two hit batters and a fielder’s choice.

BOLD then added three runs in the top of the fourth on an error, another hit batsman and a wild pitch. RBI singles from Andy Hardin and Walton moved the Warriors to a seemingly comfortable lead.

Especially with the way starter Aiden Efling was going. He held the Greyhounds hitless until Justin Berg singled with one out in the fourth.

But in the sixth inning, Cathedral’s offense woke up.

Isaiah Rieser and Wilmes singled. An error scored Rieser before Jacob Berg singled in a run. A one-out single from Wilfahrt cut the lead to 5-3 and a Justin Berg base hit moved Cathedral to within 5-4.

Cathedral would make the comeback complete in the bottom of the seventh when Wilmes led off with a single and Jacob Berg reached on a one-out infield single.

After a strikeout for the second out, Wilfahrt drove a 2-1 Tersteg offering into the gap in left-center scoring two runs.

The win was especially big because this will probably vault the Greyhounds into the No. 1 spot in the QRF ratings for Section 2A and a first round bye in postseason play.
