St. Peter defeats New Ulm boys
NEW ULM — St. Peter scored two second-half goals just over five minutes apart and came away with a 2-1 win over New Ulm Tuesday night in a Big South Conference boys’ soccer game.
Christian Edwards scored the lone New Ulm goal.
New Ulm goalie Aaron Dewanz stopped 12 St. Peter shots.
” I knew that St.Peter was coming here looking for some payback from last year when we beat them in the last game,” New Ulm coach Dave Dake said. “I knew that it was going to be tough and they were going to come out strong. But when we got that first goal — our heads went up and their’s went down.”
Edwards’ goal came just over three minutes into the game when his left-footed kick rose by St. Peter goalkeeper Josh Robb.
New Ulm (0-2) held onto that 1-0 lead after the first half despite being outshot in the first 40 minutes 5-2.
And for the first 20 minutes of the second half the Eagles, who host Marshall Friday night, held onto that slim lead.
But at the 10:19 mark of the second half, the Saints knotted the contest on a goal from Obert Alcantara Alvarez.
And five minutes later — on a free kick — the Saints knocked in the eventual game-winner.
Dake said that there is a lot going on during a free kick that can lead to some defensive confusion and may have on the Saints’ goal.
“There is a lot of anticipation before they kick the ball and all that you are thinking is is the ball going to come to me,” Dake said. “And when they kicked the ball we must have had some defensive failure somewhere.”
Despite the loss, Dake said that he saw improvement from his team from their game with Worthington.
“The team that we were tonight was totally different than the team that we took to Worthington,” he said. “We were in formation tonight, there was nobody running the team on their own. We made good passes and we communicated well. We played very well.”
