• Scheffler made the big play on Friday night in the Section 3A championship game, throwing a 5-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds left as Springfield came back from a 21-17 deficit. The Tigers advanced to the Class A state tournament for the second year in a row with a 23-21 victory over Martin County West at Southwest Minnesota State University.

• Scheffler’s pass to Nolan Hovland gave him 171 yards passing and three touchdown passes on the day. He also threw a touchdown pass to Ivan Hovland and Jordan Toll earlier in the game. The Tigers (10-0) face Blooming Prairie at 12 p.m. on Saturday at Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton High School in the Class A quarterfinals.

“Decker Scheffler made some big time plays at the most crucial times in the winning drive against MCW,” head coach Bob Fink said. “Decker does an excellent job leading the potent Tiger offense which averages 37 points per game.”
