Greyhounds roll past Mustangs 26-3

NEW ULM — Cathedral scored eight in the first, 11 in the second and seven in the fourth to blow out Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 26-3 on Monday in a Tomahawk conference baseball game.

Cathedral was led by Elliot Schabert, who went 3 for 5 with a double, two triples and two RBIs, while Jevan Wilfahrt went 1 for 3 with a triple, an RBI and two walks. Jake Finstad went 1 for 2 with a double, a walk and an RBI.

Caleb Forstner got the win, going three innings and giving up no runs on one hit and no walks. He also struck out three batters.

Cathedral got 17 hits and got on base 32 times which is ninth most in state history according to the Minnesota State High School League’s records online.

In the first inning, Cathedral scored eight runs on five hits and three errors. Jake Finstad got on base twice in the inning on a leadoff error and a double that scored a run.

In the second inning that saw the Greyhounds score 11 runs on seven hits and four errors, one of Schabert’s triples scored Logan Mielke to highlight the inning. After a scoreless third, the Greyhounds added seven more runs to the board on three hits and three errors.

Back-to-back triples by Schabert and Wilfahrt scored a run each to highlight the fourth.

“We were able to get a lot of different people into the game, lots of different people contributed,” Cathedral head coach Alan Woitas said. “We put good at-bats together and hit the ball hard and took advantage of some of their mistakes.”

BLHS was led by Eli Kirtz, who went 2 for 2 with a triple and a inside-the-park home run.

Kirtz got the loss on the mound for the Mustangs.

Cathedral (10-3, 9-3) will play Mankato Loyola at Johnson Park on Tuesday, while BLHS (0-9) will play GFW on Tuesday.
