Gimberlin, Steel cruise by Willmar

WILLMAR – Joey Gimberlin had a pair of goals and an assist to help lead the New Ulm Steel to a 6-1 victory over the Willmar WarHawks on Saturday night in NA3HL action.

Gimberlin first put the Steel ahead 1-0 with a goal at 8:01 into the first period on assists by Jack Parks and Stanislav Danaev before Keegan Bauman scored a goal on assists from Michael Savelkoul and Jacob Halvorson 31 seconds later to put the Steel up 2-0.

Willmar then got a goal by Dylan Svoboda to cut the lead to 2-1 after one period before Gimberlin added his second goal of the night in the second period on a power-play goal that was assisted by Teddy Lillico and Corey Stormer 10:29 into the period.

The Steel extended their lead to 4-1 13:10 into the final period on a goal by Danaev that was assisted on by Bauman and Gimberlin.

The Steel then tacked on another goal unassisted by Jacob Berkowitz with just around five minutes left to play before Parker Dorn added the final goal of the night for the Steel on an assist by Corey Stormer with less than three minutes to go.

New Ulm goalie Jack Raymond had a big night also, making 41 saves to keep the WarHawks at bay.

The Steel were outshot 42-37, but that had little effect in the end.

The Steel (3-2) next host Alexandria at 7:10 p.m. on Thursday at the New Ulm Civic Center.
