Mankato VFW knocks out SE
SLEEPY EYE — Mankato VFW continued to roll in the District 2, Northwest Subdistrict playoffs on Friday, this time defeating host Sleepy Eye 14-4.
Mankato finished the game with 11 hits as it ended Sleepy Eye’s season. Mankato will now have to beat Hutchinson twice to win the subdistrict title. Both Mankato and Hutchinson advanced to next week’s District 2 tournament in St. James, along with the host team St. James.
Jack Nelson took the loss for Sleepy Eye. He went 3 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and five runs.
Mankato scored two runs in the top of the first inning as Wyatt Block delivered an early RBI single. Block finished the game 2 for 3 with four RBIs.
Mankato added another run in the second inning and two more in the fourth to go up 5-0. In the bottom of the fourth, Sleepy Eye got on the board thanks to an RBI single by Kyle Goblirsch and an RBI grounder by Jacob Meyer.
Mankato erupted for five runs in the fifth inning to go up 10-2 and Sleepy Eye scored a run in the fifth when Jackson Huiras delivered an RBI single. Meyer delivered an RBI single in the seventh for Sleepy Eye’s final run.
