VFW Silver drops game to Willmar

ESSIG — New Ulm Silver finished the Junior Upper Midwest Classic with a 1-3 record after falling to Wayzata 8-5 on Saturday in Essig.

New Ulm hung tough with Wayzata, but unearned runs hurt New Ulm in the end. Wayzata scored six unearned runs in the fifth inning to escape with the win.

Overall, Silver coach John Giefer was pleased with his team’s effort this weekend, including a 4-0 victory over Prior Lake on Saturday where Silver used the squeeze play to their advantage to score a couple of runs.

“We played some good competition, that’s what this tournament brings,” Giefer said. “We were in every game and played well. We’re playing some junior legion teams and those are some good teams.”

Jayden Drill took the loss for New Ulm. He went 2 2/3 innings, allowed three runs, one of them earned. Carter Lang started and gave up five runs (one earned run) over 4 1/3 innings.

Carson Helget was 2 for 3 and Aiden Eckstein was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for New Ulm. Josh Giefer was also 2 for 4 with three RBIs.

New Ulm is off until Wednesday when it plays at Mapleton.

Willmar 7, Sleepy Eye 2

Prior Lake 10, Sleepy Eye 4

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye dropped two games on Saturday at the Junior Upper Midwest Classic and finished 0-4 in the tournament.

Against Willmar, Carson Domeier allowed six runs in six innings, three of them earned. He gave up five hits, struck out one and walked five.

Domeier finished the game 2 for 3 and Jake Lux was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Kyle Goblirsch gave up two runs in four innings to take the loss in the game against Prior Lake.

Jacob Meyer was 2 for 4 and Kadon Strong was 2 for 3. Kegan Heiderscheidt was 2 for 3 with a run scored.
