Tigers sneak past ML/GHEC/T, survive in 2A playoffs

MANKATO — The Springfield Tigers survived to play another day after a 4-3 win over Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman on Saturday in a Section 2A baseball elimination bracket playoff game.

Decker Scheffler hit a solo shot in the first inning to put the Tigers up 1-0. He ended 1 for 3 on day.

Isaac Fink also added a pair of RBIs on a single, while Mitchell Buerkle added the other RBI on a base hit. Tanner Vogel, Scheffler, Henry Scheitel, Buerkle and Tori Helget were the runners that scored. Mason Rummel also added a hit for Springfield.

Rummel started for Springfield on the mound, giving up two earned runs on four hits and a pair of walks in four innings. Rummel struck out two.

Justin Haugo got the win in relief, pitching one inning while allowing a pair of runs on a walk and two hits. He struck out one.

Scheitel got the save for the Tigers with two innings of work, allowing two hits with a strikeout.

The Jaguars’ Zach Jahnz pitched the complete game in the loss, allowing five earned runs on four walks and five hits, despite striking out 11.

Springfield, the No. 8 seed, moves on to take on No. 8-seeded Cleveland on Thursday at Franklin Rogers Park. The winner will play BOLD at 7:30 p.m. after for a shot to play in the Section 2A final against Sleepy Eye on Thursday.
