New Ulm routs Waseca in 2AAA

NEW ULM — New Ulm head baseball coach Kevin Briggs said that he did not know if this was Tyler Roufs best mound performance of the season for the Eagles.

Roufs came within one hit of a no-hitter and a perfect game against Waseca Saturday in the first round of the Section 2AAA tournament.

Roufs allowed only a two-out single to Cam Madsen in the second inning — the only baserunnner permitted by Roufs who struck out nine — as New Ulm hammered Waseca 11-0 at Mueller Park.

The game was stopped after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run lead rule.

Cam Madsen took the loss for Waseca (2-13). He lasted 3 2/3 innings and was charged with nine runs.

Andrew Peters led the 10-hit attack with three hits including two doubles and a triple. He also drove in two runs.

Hunter Ranweiler and Braden Zimmerman each collected two hits. Ranweiler and Nolan Drill each had a triple with Roufs doubling.

New Ulm, now 17-3, will host Marshall at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Johnson Park.

“We came out sharp and Roufs had command of everything,” Briggs said. “He looked really good and offensively we came out and put three (runs) on the board and set the tempo.”

The Eagles scored those three runs in the first inning using walks to Ranweiler and Luke Scheid to start the inning.

Peters followed with an RBI double to left to score Ranweiler. Scheid raced home on a wild pitch with Peters scoring on a Sam Berg groundout.

New Ulm added three more runs in the third. Ranweiler legged out an infield single and stole second. A Luke Scheid base hit scored Ranweiler. Peters’ second double of the game brought in Scheid with Peters coming into score on Keaton Knaak groundout.

“When our top of the order gets on, the middle of our line-up has been producing RBIs,” Briggs said. “When we put 10 hits on the board I like our chances.”

Meanwhile Roufs was cruising along against Waseca batters. He struck out five of the last six outs of the game.

“He has pitched well all year,” Briggs sad. “He beat Marshall and pitched a heck of a game in St. Cloud. It was nice to see him sharp today.”

The Eagles added five more runs in the fourth. Drill laced a pinch-hit triple and scored on a wild pitch. One out later, Ranweiler tripled. Courtesy runner Joe Fortwengler lumbered home on another wild pitch. Peters tripled to end Madsen’s day. Matt Olsem came in and promptly hit Berg before walking Jadon Domeier. Roufs doubled in two more runs before a Zimmerman base hit made it 11-0.

“I told the team that the only team that is going to beat them is themselves,” Briggs said.
