NEW ULM — Former New Ulmite Paul Wyczawski and current head baseball coach of the Dubuque University Spartans, led Dubuque to their first-ever Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament title with an 11-6 victory over Wartburg on Saturday.

Dubuque first ended its regular season with an eight-game winning streak and a conference title, finishing 16-5 last weekend. It was the school’s first conference title in their 62-year history.

Dubuque defeated Wartburg 3-2 Friday before advancing to play Wartburg again on Saturday for the IIAC tournament title.

Wyczawski, a 1976 graduate of New Ulm High School, now has 614 career coaching wins in baseball and won his fifth conference championship in five states.

He has won championships in Minnesota, South Dakota, Mississippi, Texas and Iowa.

Now in his 33rd year coaching, he also adds 332 wins as an assistant coach at Murray State and Mississipi State.

Wyczawski played for Jim Senske (707 wins) at New Ulm High School. Other former Senske players who were or are head baseball coaches are Brian Raabe (Forest Lake High School and current Bethel University), Scott Backer, Kurt Moelter (St. Peter High School) and Mike Wenninger (Luverne High School).

Dubuque will represent the IIAC in the NCAA Division III Tournament next weekend at a site to be released late Sunday.
