A nation of immigrants

To the editor: Our Great Nation is indeed a nation of immigrants. Archeologists have determined that everyone, even the indigenous people living on the North American continent, are here because of immigration. We also used to be a nation of laws, but it seems we are stepping away from accepting our laws as written and choosing to believe the parts of the laws that are convenient to us or letting our emotions rule what we think should be right. The body of law governing the U.S. immigration policy is called the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). The INA allows the United States ...

City donations

To the editor: Government is in place to provide services in accord with the requirements of the U.S. Constitution. We pay our taxes to fund these services. Years ago it was the individuals, organizations, clubs, churches and foundations who raised funds to help people in need. The government stepped in to help out when the private charities couldn’t or wouldn’t provide those services. The best example of that is Social Security which was set up to assist those who could not financially survive on their own after a lifetime of working or being disabled. Private retirement funds ...

Government greed

To the editor: Governor, you are proud of amassing $17 plus billion from our hardworking, income-strapped public, driving a lot of businesses out of business as well? Cost of living soaring, yet your greed demands spend, spend, spend on the super ridiculous during these tough financial times? A surplus of $17 billion is a disgrace, pure greed and totally unnecessary to amass. Cut taxes, governor and legislature, do your jobs properly in support of the 1owly taxpayers. Leave the $17 billion in the bank, cut taxes across the board for everyone from property taxes to gasoline taxes, ...

Keep pets at home

To the editor: This morning I read the theft of a cat report. It’s a shame that you can’t enjoy birds in your own yard without being bothered by someone’s pets. Cats don’t need to go outside. They have litterbox and food inside. As a responsible pet owner consider your neighbors. Keep your pets in your own home/yard. Dogs and cats should not be running at large. I would not want them after the birds or digging up my flowerbed for a litterbox. We had pets all our lives but also kept them at our home, not all over the neighborhood. Elaine Haala New Ulm

Giving credit for Harman Park ice rink

To the editor: I would just like comment on the Dec. 29 article on the outdoor ice rink at Harmon Park given by Tom Schmitz and give credit where credit is due. Thank you to the donations made by MR Paving and Kraus Tree service for the use of their equipment and time. MR Paving donated equipment and man hours to level off the area where the rink is located. Kraus Tree Service donated the use of their snow blower to help remove the snow prior to the liner donated by the NUSE Hockey Association being put down. Finally a big thank you to the New Ulm/Sleepy Eye Boys Hockey team and ...

The Focus of the ISD-88 School Board — Clearing up misconceptions

To the editor: On Sunday it was reported in a recap of the past year that the most prominent news story of the year was the culture conflict in the school district. In the article it was implied that the non-incumbents in the race for a seat on the school board who support traditional values did not wish our schools to foster a welcoming atmosphere. Quote: “In the November election, the three incumbents were re-elected, and the district continues with its efforts to foster a welcoming atmosphere.” The implication of the above statement leaves readers with a false impression about ...
