“Only one in New Ulm”
White Boxer Coffee Company has ribbon cutting for roasting facility
White Boxer Coffee Company co-owner Kristine Wald cuts the ribbon as their roaster facility is officially open. The location is not open to the public, but people can buy White Boxer Coffee in several New Ulm locations and on their website.
NEW ULM — The New Ulm Chamber of Commerce Willkommen Committee held a ribbon cutting Thursday for White Boxer Coffee Company’s new roasting facility.
White Boxer Coffee Company specializes in roasting specialty coffee beans locally. Owners Tallen and Kristine Wald said they are the only business in New Ulm doing this. The business started a year ago with a small roaster in the family’s garage. Now they have a large roaster and K-Cup machine in their own roasting facility.
“We started roasting coffee [because we found] there’s run-of-the-mill coffee that’s very burnt and tart,” Kristine Wald said. “That’s what a lot of people think coffee is supposed to taste like. It’s not good coffee.”
The White Boxer name comes from the family’s dog Ares, a white boxer the couple adopted six months into their relationship. The logo for the business is pink because Aries has always worn a bright pink collar. Family is important to the Walds, and their three children all help out with the business.
“Our oldest one is learning Excel and running supply and demand for when we need to order fresh beans,” Kristine Wald said. “Our middle one does the free in-town local deliveries. If you order online she comes to your house, rings your doorbell, and shakes your hand. And then our little guy does a lot of the tagging.”
The Walds said their business has spread a lot in the last year through word of mouth. With an expansion of the business through their new roasting location and branching out into K-Cups, they hope to keep growing.
“Everybody seems to love it once they’ve tried it,” Kristine Wald said. “Getting the name out since we don’t have a storefront is harder. But once people have tried it, they become repeat buyers.”
Their roasting facility will not serve as a storefront and is not open to the public. Even so, they do have several ways people can find their coffee locally.
“A to Zinnia and nature’s pantry are local,” Kristine Wald said. “[They’re available] on our website, we have free in-town delivery in New Ulm. The Coffee Keller opening later this fall will also carry our coffee beans.”
