Voters taking advantage of absentee voting

1,410 ballots returned to AT office as of Thursday

NEW ULM — Brown County voters are taking advantage of early state general election voting this fall.

The Brown County Auditor/Treasurer’s office received 1,410 absentee ballots as of Thursday, Oct. 27, according to Auditor-Treasurer Kelly Hotovec.

She said about 5,000 more absentee ballots were received 10 days prior to the 2020 presidential election.

“About 40% of of ballots sent by mail or picked up in person have been returned,” Hotovec said.

“There’s been a good turnout so far. We’ve been very busy. Lots of voters are coming to vote early in the office,” Hotovec added.

Brown County mail ballots are being used in Cobden, Evan and Hanska plus the townships of Albin, Cottonwood, Home, Lake Hanska, Linden, Mulligan, Prairieville, Sigel, Stark and Stately.

Any eligible voter can vote early in person or by mail, which is called voting by absentee ballot.

Absentee Ballot packets can be tracked from the point the voter submits the request/application to the point it is accepted by the county. This can be done on the county website: co.brown.mn.us under the Election tab under Auditor-Treasurer Information.

Direct ballot voting begins Tuesday, Nov. 1. Voters can put ballots directly into the voting tabulator outside the auditor-treasurers office in the courthouse.

Absentee voting will also be available in the courthouse from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5.

Hotovec said anybody who voted absentee or by mail should allow for delivery time since any ballots received after election day will be rejected.

Mail ballots will be accepted until 8 p.m. on election day, Tuesday, Nov. 8. Absentee ballots will be accepted until 3 p.m. on election day.

In-person early voting is available in the Brown County Courthouse, 14 S. State during normal office hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and until 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7.

Brown County has no ballot drop box. Ballots may be returned by mail or in person. An agent may deliver up to three ballots. They must show identification with name and signature if returning someone else’s ballot.

Brown County has 16,436 registered voters for the state general election.
