New Ulm begins developing new comprehensive plan

The city of New Ulm is starting work on its new comprehensive plan by launching a website, collecting community ideas for the city’s future and inviting residents to participate in the planning process, which will included working with consultants to guide the work.

The new plan will help guide the city’s development over the next two decades and will include recommendations for land use, housing, business development, parks, transportation and downtown vitality, among other vital issues. It is intended provide a single, comprehensive umbrella that includes citizen recommendations to direct the community’s vision for the future.

Expected to be completed by October 2023, the plan will also provide guidance for four key locations in the New Ulm area where development or redevelopment is expected to occur.

The planning process will include numerous opportunities for residents to contribute their ideas and comments, both in-person and online. Online activities include the following:

• A project website at www.NewUlmPlan.org with information and opportunities to comment on the plan.

• A brief online survey, available at the website, to collect ideas for New Ulm’s future.

• For those who prefer to complete the survey on paper, we will be sending a copy of the survey in your July utility bill. Paper surveys can be returned to City Hall, Recreation Center or Senior Center until Aug. 5, 2022.

• An interactive online map, also available at the website, to collect issues and ideas for New Ulm’s future.

In-person public participation activities will begin with a workshop scheduled for Aug. 10 and continue through the fall — including at this year’s Oktoberfest.
